For starters, I have always struggled with my weight. I do not recall a time that I was ever under 200 pounds. I know back in my high school days I was always between 204-216. I have always had knee problems and was diagnosed with high blood pressure at 17. But somehow my weight never seemed like it was all that bad, I guess it was just that I always carried my weight "well", if in fact there is a way to carry excess weight well is beyond me. But it was well hidden on my taller frame. My highest weight would have to be 270, and that recently snuck up on me. I was in such shock, to see the numbers appear on the scale as they did. I always knew my clothes were fitting tight, but refused to face reality and actually step on that damned scale. When I finally did, it was a rude awakening! (A much needed one.)
My older sister and I had often talked about doing gastric bypass surgery together and one day we just decided to make an appointment with Dr. Boone in Fresno. The appointment went great and before we knew it we were on the fast track to getting our necessary appointments out of the way. My insurance approved me first, and I scheduled my date for Jan 14th, 2008... But that date eventually had to be pushed back a bit because I had just been accepted to UC Merced and I had to get a start on my education...  so I scheduled my surgery for March 24th, 2008.... Come to find out Dr. Boone was taking the week of my spring break off so I had to either wait till June or do it in February. I decided it best to start my journey sooner and booked my surgery date for Feb. 11th, 2008.I had my doubts about the surgery the week before, but after sitting down and really processing the family history of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. I decided it would be best for me to just do it, and I did.
So far I am glad I did, I feel like even though the process has just started, I have ensured myself of a longer natural life. I feel better, I have more energy, I’m not as lethargic, I’m more ambitious, I feel like my confidence has taken a much needed boost.  I have learned to appreciate the beautiful family I have, as well as the amazing friends who have enhanced my life. I never thought the people I adore the most could ever be so helpful and supportive. So far everything seems to be going well, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
