Many people have attempted to use a fast for fat loss. There is some research to show that fasting may help with this and other issues. However some health authorities say it will not work, it can be dangerous and fasting can actually make you fat. So, who is right? As it turns out, both sides are.

Fasting has been around for centuries. People have used it for religious purposes, healing, weight loss, to restore healthy digestion, and a myriad of other health related reasons. The main consensus is that fasting to lose fat is not a good idea.

There are health risks associated with fasting. These may range from mild nausea to more extreme issues like hair loss, electrolyte imbalance, anorexia and heart problems.

Yet some of the main "health risks" reported are actually not health issues at all, but side effects of cleansing. When you fast, you are doing a form of extreme cleansing which actually has numerous health benefits from weight loss and fat loss to more energy.

But cleansing to such an extreme can be more problematic if you are not ready. You run the risk of creating hormonal imbalances and other chemical reactions that cause your body to go into survival mode and store any energy as extra weight and fat - so it is believed.

This is possible from fasting and happens in the case or yo yo dieting. But it is due to a hormonal imbalance, such as sharp increases and decreases in leptin, a hormone that helps regulate appetite and metabolism. Fasting may further disrupt this hormonal balance, however most of us have hormonal imbalances to begin with due to the fact that we are surrounded by environmental toxins.

Toxins are found in our bloodstream. It was noted by the Centers for Disease control for decades. It is now being seen that children under eight years old have more toxins in their young, fresh bloodstreams in higher amounts than their parents. In other words, we are being born with them.

Researchers in the health, environment and even obesity are finding that genetics cannot account for the onset of all the disease and obesity so prevalent in society. They are finding more and more that environmental toxins may be more responsible than previously thought.

On the other hand, fasting seems to not cause obesity or disease. In fact, most research done on fasting has always proven the numerous health benefits. This is not new research, but research dating back to the early 19th century standard medical journals of the United States and Europe. (Not so much research is done these days since there is not money to be made by fasting that would make up for the cost of the studies needed.)

The health benefits have shown periodic fasting to result in alleviating allergies, skin problems, autoimmune disorders and more. There is some recent research that shows those who fasted lowered their risk of heart disease by up to 40%. And many have used fasting for weight control, weight loss, and fat loss.
