I'm a 40 year old mother of five. I didn't have a problem with my weight until the birth of my first son (I was 17). My high school sweetheart and I were married and we had 3 more children (which includes a set of twins) before I was 21. So I never had time to take off any weight - tried but........ We had our last daughter when I was 25 and then I was committed to losing the weight. No more babies, no more excuses !! But as is the story with most of us - didnt' work !
I can't honestly say how much I weighed at my highest - I avoided scales - felt like if I was healthy, it didn't matter !! But I would venture to guess it was about 290. Four years ago I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes - that should have been my wake up call ! And it kind of was - I lost about 30 lbs. but then got back into bad habits ! Tried to change my life style - never really believed in dieting - knew that was just setting myself up - I always knew it had to be a life style change !!
Then my diabetes starting getting much more difficult to control. I started looking into the whole WLS in August of 08'. Went to an informational meeting with a friend (thanks Pam !) who had already had it done. I think I made up my mind then - but I felt like I wanted to do a lot more research, talk to my hubby, etc. My primary was getting concerned about my sugar levels and told me soon I would be on insulin or a different med, that would quite possibly cause me to gain more weight - well that wasn't an option so it solidified my decision!
I continued with the process - did what I needed to do - and had my surgery on April 13, 2009.
When I started the process - I think my first weight with them was 277 (have to check that), when I weighed myself the night before surgery - it was 263. and today 5 weeks and 1 day later - I'm down to 240 ! Not sure if that's good or bad - but I'm happy - for the most part. So that's where I am !!
