I've been overweight since I was a child. My BMI is 59 and I've thought about wls for awhile but have never taken it as seriously as I have in the past months. I went to a seminar for Orange Coast Memorial's Center for Obesity and was advised by their insurance coord. to change medical groups to avoid having the 6 mo. diet req. I changed and chose a Dr. who had gastric bypass herself. She requested an authorization for a referall to see Dr. LePort and it was denied by my medical group for "no medical necessity" and they "recommended" a 6 mo. physician supervised diet. I wrote an appeal letter and submitted it to Blue Shield. After approximately 2 wks. it was approved/overturned by Blue Shield. I got my consult/orientation and it's been submitted for insurance approval as of early March 2009.
Update:After only a week of waiting it was approved by insurance! I got cardiac clearance and will be having my surgery with Dr. Ali at Orange Coast Memorial in May 2009!
