10-5-10 Bariatric Surgery Orientation

Oct 05, 2010

We'll I got my referral from my Kaiser doctor for bariatric  surgery on September 30th, and fortunately my wife got her referral as well yesterday.  We attended the orientation class today, filled out the paperwork, it's being reviewed, and we should be scheduled for the Kaiser Options 12 week class within the next month.   They said all together it should take about 6 months to actually be scheduled for the surgery.  Seems like such a long time, but it's important to know everything there is to know, risks and benefits, and what changes there will be in our lives.  I was sure I wanted the lap band, but as I'm a diabetic, it looks like they will probably want to recommend the RNY gastric bypass instead.  They said for most diabetics, because of the malabsorbtion it immediately puts the diabetes in remission.  I just can't imagine what it will be like after taking 4 insulin injections a day for the last 10-15 years what it'll be like not to need it.    I've done so much research on the lap band, so I guess I'll need to research the RNY gastric bypass now.  Another bit of good news is that I've lost 6 lbs in the last week (335 lbs on 9-30, 328 lbs today) trying to get ready for the classes and surgery.  I'd read they want you to lose 10% before surgery 33 lbs, so I'm working hard to get there.
