Update!
Jan 15, 2013
I haven't been on in a few months, but for good reason! After last revision on 7/3/12, and new leak on 7/5/12, I went into a black hole of despair. My surgeon was at a point where he needed to refer me to another surgeon for evaluation and consideration of a total gastrectomy. After several consults, a CT, and a VERY EXTENSIVE swallow study, it was determined that I had 3 contained leaks and a total gastrectomy was needed. I was TERRIFIED. The option was very radical and I was being swallowed by fear and depression from all of the pain and nausea over the last several months.
Dr. Jonathan Schoen of University Hospital Denver performed a total gastrectomy on me on 1/7/13. I am one week post op and the surgery was considered a success. My small intestine is connected directly to my esophagus. Due to my unique anatomy, Dr. Schoen was able to retain some remnant stomach and put in a g-tube (aka Lifeline!) to help with my nutritional status. If all stays well, the tube will be removed with-in a few months.
I have not had a SINGLE instance of nausea post op. I swallow without pain. With the exception of the pain, I have not felt better in months. The pain however, well..... it HURT! But without some suffering, I cannot fully appreciate the good in life.
I will do better in keeping this updated!
