Kathryn Eubanks

"Dr. Eubanks first approached me regarding WLS several years ago and I was very resistant. I had all the wrong fears, but she has been patient and kind and supportive, always trying to further the goal of improving my health and my enjoyment of life. She is extremely thorough and knowledgeable regarding ym obesity issues and my diabetes, and when I finally agreed to research WLS she guided me every step of the way and was invaluable both in finding the best surgeon, and in preparing myself for the surgery. She maintained thorough aftercare and has continually followed up with utmost care and has seemed to enjoy my progress almost as much as I have."

Alexian Brothers Medical Center (COE)

"My surgery time was bumped up by several hours and in spite of scheduling, there were no rooms for me in ICU or on the surgical postop floor so I remained in the recovery room for 30 hours. In the recovery room the staff was prompt and courteous and did their best to see to my needs, but the bed was so uncomfortable that after 30 hours on the gurney, my back muscles started spasming. Being stuck there in the dead of the night with less staff made it difficult for them to care for me and the other bypass patient who were stuck there due to the room shortage. When I did finally get to a room on the 4th floor it was run-down and paint peeling etc. There was little or no care to make me comfortable or help me sit up in bed much less get out of bed and walk the halls as we were told to do by the doctors. Nurses and other staff were slow to respond, curt, and twice non-English speaking. I had to page 3 times to go to the bathroom and had to wait several times to the point of finally needing to use the bedpan instead because I didn't think I'd make it to the toilet. Pain management was good via the morphine drip, but my back pain was such that I was unable to walk/stand without excruciating pain for almost 3 weeks. I was due to stay 5 days and insisted on going home on day 4 because I couldn't stand the hospital care a minute longer. The rooms were very warm and if I hadn't brought my own mini fan I'd have been miserably hot. I had to ask several times for hygiene such as being washed/spongebathed and again, the staff was slow to respond and unemotional to the point of making me feel like a piece of meat. Only the night staff on night 3 had a kind, caring nurse who went out of her way to make me comfortable help me arrange the pillows so my back wouldn't hurt and actually check up on me instead of waiting to be paged 3 times. I am a diabetic and had brought my own glucometer to use as it takes the blood sample from the arm not fingers and doesn't hurt at all, and most of the nurses were curious and willing to let my husband or myself test me, but several insisted on using the hospitals machine which was 5 years old, used painful finger lances and required a large drop of blood instead of a tiny amount. They need to be more responsive to patients' needs and more active rather than passive in their care. No patient should have to fight and argue just to get a minimum of care, cleaning and aid."

James M. Kane Sr.

"Dr. Kane Sr has been doing this surgery forever and was extremely willing to answer the dozens of questions I had about the procedure. Even 5 days before my surgery when I had last minute fears and questions he scheduled me for an office visit and answered every last question and concern. He has vry late evning hours (as late as 10pm) which was extremely convenient for me. He has a great friendly demeanor and gave my husband a thorough idea of how the surgery went as I was in recovery. The follow up visits are brief and you do spend more time dealing with his staff than the doctor. Also while it is certainly worth the wait to have his expertise available to you, be prepared to wait sometimes 90 minutes past your appointment time (on 2-3 occasions) so patience is needed with the office staff. I am only 7 weeks out from my surgery, but aftercare seems not to be a priority with this group. I did have a wound opening this week and the office fit me in immediately, so response to critical issues is there, but for standard follow ups, the attention to detail or need for bloodwork/nutritional followups seems to be unimportant. I am extremely pleased with my open RNY and am confident he was the right choice of surgeon, the best available in my area in my opinion. The only reason to rate him a B+ instead of A+ is that the surgery and the surgery alone seems to be his focus. He seemed unwilling or unconcerned with other issues like diabetes control in the hospital, post op bloodwork, etc. and pretty much dismissessome aftercare concerns that I wish he'd been more responsive to. Luckily I have a wonderful primary care physician who has shown herself willing to step in with whatever might be lacking with the aftercare here. There are several surgeons in this group and it was a little confusing in the hospital as my daily visits from the surgeons were with all different ones each day. It would have been nice instead to only have 1 or 2 to deal with and expect instead of trying to remember names of new ones each day. Still overall I'd highly recommend Dr. Kane to anyone who asked. Any of the less than positive experiences I had are definitely outweighed by the confidence I had that Dr. Kane was the most thorough and most expereinced surgeon for the open RNY in my area."
