Slow and steady, 10 months out, life is good

Mar 10, 2013

Almost a year out and seem to be on a slow but steady weight loss journey. I have been on a plateau for several weeks, which is pretty common for me, I lose 10 lbs then bounce up and down 3 lbs for several weeks before dropping down another 10.  I am 4 lbs away from 100lb loss. My highest weight was 307, this is when I started getting ready for WLS. Funny how I was so glued to this site leading up to and right after my surgery. The more normal I felt, as time went on after surgery, the less I logged on. I love this site as a reference when questions come up and the support people give each other is awesome.

Life is so much better this year. So nice to be able to move easier, breath easier, take less medication and to be so much more comfortable in my clothes. It is so nice to look at pictures that people take and not feel completely embarrassed.  I am still struggling to get into an exercise routine but know I will get there.

I am so thankful that I still enjoy all of the things I did before wls, including cooking for my family, grocery shopping, going out to eat and socializing. I just eat less and my husband orders 1/2 meals so he can help me with mine. I am thankful for my families never ending support. I am thankful for the people I work with and the support they have given. They all seem so happy that I am finally healthy. I am thankful for my awesome surgeon, his amazing skills saved my life. When the situation with my hiatal hernia was more complicated than understood before surgery, he was able to fix it and do a successful wls. I really feel like I dodged a bullet with my health. So much to be thankful for this year.

I had my 9 month post surgery appointment a few weeks ago. My labs were great, my weight loss is on track and my goal for the next year is to lose another 40 lbs.

Not much else for today.

One month out

Jun 22, 2012

It is good to be 4.5 weeks out from surgery. The first few weeks were so uncomfortable and now I am feeling so much closer to normal. My recovery has been pretty normal from everything I have read. I can eat most things but get full after a few bites. I am not at the normal food phase so this could change. It is awesome to have my clothes fit and actually be too big. I had a pair of pants in my closet that were too small before surgery, I wore them yesterday and they were falling down by the end of the day. I went to see my fitness trainer today and for the first time, in a long time, I was able to get easily down on the floor to do stretching. Getting back up wasn't so bad either, yay! I am thankful to have another week of working part time. My energy level really drops after a few hours at work. All in all, this experience has been much more positive than negative. It still seems kind of surreal that I will just continue to drop weight. It is so odd to feel thin at 244 lbs, knowing that it is just the beginning of this journey. Anyways, just a few thoughts for today. It is good to have a place to journal and track progress.

Glad to have surgery behind me

Jun 01, 2012

Hard to believe it has been almost two weeks since surgery. It has been a challenging few weeks, but nothing worse than anything I have read about from others experiences posted on the site. I am so glad to have the hiatal hernia repair done. Turns out it was stuck up in my chest with adhesions. I am so thankful to have an awesome surgeon. Breathing should be so much easier now. The RNY went well too. I lost alot of blood during surgery and had a transfusion so I am really working on getting in my iron/Vit C each day. I am finally able to get in all of my supplements each day. Still working on getting enough  protein in through the drinks. Pain gets less each day. So far my pouch has been agreeable, no issues with food, pills, etc. The main thing I am struggling with right now is sleeping through the night (can't sleep more than 3 hrs at a time) and just feeling tired and weak. I am fortunate to have two more weeks to recover so hopefully my brains will be back to somewhat normal by then. My husband has been absolutely amazing. He stayed at my side the whole time I was in the hospital, even stayed over at night. He just went back to work on Wednesday and has had our family staying with me a few hours a day. We had our 27 year wedding anniversary yesterday. I am so blessed. So far so good.

Still waiting, three weeks to go...

Apr 28, 2012

I am still three weeks out. It has been a really long year of prepping and thinking about my upcoming surgery. The waiting is really challenging. I have been ready to go with insurance approval since February but could not get my surgery scheduled sooner than May. The good news is that I have worked at making things easier by giving up diet coke, white sugar, white flour, white rice, and just recently coffee. I had a total yeast die off reaction after suddenly stopping the white stuff. Thrush, ring worm and other issues. After multiple prescriptions of anti yeast meds and nystatin the reaction is finally over. The weaning of coffee has been a lot slower with less reaction. I have been reducing by about 1/4 cup a week. Yesterday was the first day completely caffeine free with barely a headache. Yay. No reason to suffer caffeine withdrawal during surgery recovery. The loss of 30+ pounds prepping for surgery is already helping my energy level and overall health issues.  It is great to have a glimpse of whats to come. The 30 carb pre-diet is getting old already. Three more weeks, I am so ready for this to be done, to be recovered and move on.

Still working through the pre-surgery checklist

Apr 11, 2012

I am just about done with the pre-surgery checklist my new surgeon requires. Still waiting for a surgery date. I am really hoping to keep an early May date. Cardiologist gave approval today. Have appt with PCP next week for her approval. What a process. Hard to be a planner and not have a firm date to work towards. Hopefully by the end of the week.

A new day and a new doctor

Apr 03, 2012

This has been almost a year long process. Last week I just really started having the feeling that I needed to switch hospitals and surgeons. Today I had a consult with a surgeon that feels like a much better fit. The bonus is he is on the list covered 100% by my insurance. The other surgeon was going to cost me 10% out of pocket.  The other bonus is he is thorough in his explanations and very easy to talk to. I feel more like a patient and less like a number coming through. Even though I am really relieved to have made this decision, it will be hard to cancel my surgery date with the original hospital. Starting my low carb pre-surgery diet today. New surgery date should still be around the first part of May. So ready to get this done and behind me.
