Just Three More Days to Go!

Apr 09, 2010

I went yesterday for my pre op nursing visit and then to the hospital to get everything set up for Monday. They gave me my prescriptions ahead of time and holy cow am I THANKFUL for insurance!  The Lovenox blood thinner shots that I will have to give myself for 10 days after the surgery cost $387.99!! We only had to pay $30.  Whew !
I have started to pack my bag and get things ready for when I get home.

I have my own little space in the pantry and fridge. I have two much smaller sets of dishes just for me.  One is tiny but it will help me not feel so awkward eating from a huge plate with so little on it.

The other is a bit bigger but still way smaller than an actual dinner plate

It's all starting to sink in now that I am just THREE days away from changing my life.  WOW!

Here We Go!

Mar 16, 2010

On January 6, 2009 I took the first step to attaining my WLS goal.  I attended the WLS seminar near me.  I had been contemplating the surgery for several months but hadn't acted on it out of incorrect information and other people's fears.  Finally the sleep apnea and other health issues that go along with being super obese started taking its toll on me physically AND mentally.  Yes, SUPER obese.  At my heaviest I weighed in at 298 lbs.  That's a sizeable number for someone who is only 5 feet 2 inches tall.  Stepping on the scale that day was a life changing event.  I saw that number, stepped off the scale and dropped to the floor in a heap of tears.  How could I have let myself get so large?  How could I have let my health get so poor?

That was the day that I started researching the different types of weight loss surgeries.  I decided the gastric bypass was the best option for me and made an appointment with a WLS doctor.  Part of the requirements for an appointment with the doctor was the patient had to have been to a WLS seminar before the appointment.  So my husband and I went to the seminar closest to us.  I loved the doctor that gave the seminar.  He was so straight forward and brutally honest.  It was evident that he honestly cares about his patients.  I ended up cancelling the other appointment and scheduling with Dr. Matin.

I was very pleased with my decision after meeting with him.  He took his time to address all of my questions and concerns.  I didn't leave his office feeling like just another dollar sign or number.  The office personnel was great also.  Tracy, the lady that runs the office, is simply amazing!  She kept on top of everything throughout the entire process.  She made regular calls to me to follow up with what and when I needed to accomplish for the insurance requirements.  And anytime I called or emailed she responded promptly.

So after having to start all over twice on a six month supervised weight loss program due to outside circumstances I finally completed all my insurance requirements on January 19.  Tracy submitted everything to insurance on February 21 after receiving my psychological evaluation.  I received the call that my insurance had approved me yesterday, March 15.

I have so many feelings rushing through me at this time; excitement, disbelief, anxiety, worry, elation, hope, fear.  At times I literally feel sick to my stomach with it all.  It still hasn't completely sunk in yet that in less than 2 months all my efforts will be realized.  But for now I will simply be content with the knowledge that in spite of all the set backs and delays I persevered and kept my eye on the goal I had set.  No one stopped me, not even myself when all the doubts and obstacles hit.

I am Brooke Mann, and I will soon be a former obese woman!
