My experience

Nov 29, 2006

5/27/2006 - I had a consultation appointment on 05/25/2006. It was a good experience and I have decided to go ahead and have surgery (provided my insurance cooperates). Today I went for my Lab work ex. blood work and urine sample.

05/31/2006- Today I went to my primary care physician to make sure that she was on board with my surgery. She was totally supportive. So now it is all up to the insurance. I have an appointment with the cardiologist this Tuesday.

06/06/2006- I went to the cardiologist today and she just scheduled me for the other tests ( a stress test, something to check my circulation, and an ekg). I am a little nervous about the stress test. 5 hours at the doctor's office, and running on a treadmill, sounds like a nightmare. I finally received an e mail from my insurance policy and the surgery is covered. That was a quite a relief. I am still unsure of whether or not I will have to do the six months of dieting (god, I hope not, that would suck).

06/15/2006- Since 06/06/06, I have gone for my stress test. It was not even close to five hours and it was not half as bad as I had anticipated. I went for my first of 2 psch consults ( also not that bad), I have seen the gastroenterologist ( I set up endoscopy), and I went to one support group meeting as well as an educational seminar. Both the seminar and the group were helpful, although I have to admit I felt kind of stupid at first walking into the support group meeting. The chairs were set up in a circle and I just immediately assumed I would be forced to "share". Again that was just me overreacting and it was really helpful. I have a arterial scan set up at the cardiologist this coming Monday. Hopefully that goes OK.

I also got receipts or proof that I have belonged to some kind of gym for the past two years. I am not sure that it will make a difference with my insurance, but it can't hurt.

06/28/2006- I had the arterial scan and everything went well. All the results were normal. All I have left to do is the Endoscopy, metabolic testing, consult with the nutritionist, another visit with the cardiologist and one more support group meeting. Hopefully everything will be done by 07/19. Now I just have to wait for the insurance company's decision. That has been the hardest part of everything so far.

It's kind of crazy to make a decsion to do something to drastically improve your life and have to wait for an insurance company's approval.

07/17/2006- I went to my PCP yesterday because I am freaking out about getting an insurance approval. I have been preparing myself for the " you are going to have to wait 6 months" answer. When I went to see her, my Dr. just said to relax and enjoy my summer. She has a 6 month weight history and documentation of previous weight loss attempts. I just can't shake it, i don't think I will be completely at ease until I have a date. I have my last 2 pre- op tests on 07/18 and 07/19. Then my surgeons office can submit to the insurance company. I am a little nervouse about the endoscopy, because I have to be sedated. Hopefully all goes well.

07/19/2006- Today I went for the endoscopy. I have to admit, I was nervous. Everything went well and again it was just me overreacting. I did not feel a thing. The nurses, the anesthesiologist, and the doctor were all great. My doctor said everything was normal and he would get the results to my surgeon in a couple of day's. I had my nutritional consult and metabolic testing yesterday. I am officially done with pre-op appts. WOO-HOO!!!

08/14/2006- I have a pending surgery date!!! September 19 2006. I am so excited. I am hoping everything goes well. I still have to wait for an approval. I have all my pre-op appointments scheduled. I got a date way sooner than I anticipated.

08/28/06- So last week I found out that as of September 1st 2006 my insurance is going to change. I was freaking out because I am in the middle of trying to get the surgery approved and just like that... a new development. Thankfully, according to "the memo" I received the insurance is not going to change much. I am going from a Direct HMO plan to a POS plan. Apparently the change mostly concerns out of network benefits and is an upgrade rather than a downgrade. But still... how annoying? I called the surgeon's office to inform them of the upcoming change and when I spoke to the surgery scheduler she said the surgery had been approved. Oh my god...I was thrilled. I called the insurance company and explained what was going on and they said it would not matter, I had already been approved. Thank god!!!!!!!!!! My date is 09/19/06. I can not wait.

So much has happenend over the last few months and I am the heaviest I have ever been. I just seem to be gaining and gaining. I don't know if it was because I had a potential surgery date looming or what. What I do know is that it has become unbearable. I don't know how this happenend.

I have 3 appointments before the surgery. 1) with the surgeon 2) at the hospital 3) with my doctor.

09/23/2006 - I had my surgery on 09/19/2006 and I have been home for 3 day's. I really feel sooo much better than I had anticipated. It has only been 5 days but I feel really good. I probably should be walking around a little more. But I feel kinda silly walking around in circles in my apartment. Getting used to watching every one else eating around me has not been the best but what can you do... I have my post op appointment on 09/26 and I can't wait to hear what the Dr. has to say. I really am relieved to be on the post op side of things.

11/29/
2006  - So it has been a super long time since I have posted anything. I have lost 44 lbs in 2 months and I am feeling great.  I should be excersizing more, drinking more water and probably eating better than I have been but...I really do feel great. I gotta get excersizing, really.  I just don't really know what to do. But that is the lamest excuse ever. I just gotta move!
