I have successfully lost copious amounts of weight many times only to regain it plus a bunch more. For a long time, I decided it would be healthier for me to just stay obese rather than continue yo-yoing as I am but now the yo-yoing has stopped. I'm only going up no matter what I do. I'm educated and intelligent, I know better than this and I know how to stop it, but for some reason I just can't. Over the years I have developed most of the comorbidities that are associated with obesity and in early 2007 I was diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus. My weight is especially detrimental to this. You would think this would make me take note and change my lifestyle to avoid the possibility of esophegeal cancer, but no, I only gained more. About two weeks ago, I gained 16 lbs in just over 4 days, had a large amount of swelling in my feet and ankles, couldn't breath if I got up to walk to the bathroom, and was so fatigued I didn't want to raise my head. MD says sounds like CHF given my symptoms, weight, and family & medical history. Thank heavens complete workup including echo showed everything normal and diuretics cleared almost all the symptoms. This finally really concerned me. I already had an appointment for a SWL orientation the following week and this made me more determined than ever to follow through. The orientation went really well and I have since met with my surgeon. We discussed the different options and have pretty well decided on the roux-en-y. We were leaning toward the sleeve until the subject of my Barrett's came up. Dr. Moon says some surgeons consider Barrett's an absolute contraindication for the sleeve and he tends to lean in that direction. He feels the bypass is much better suited for the Barrett's. This is what I went in wanting anyway. So, now I have an appt. with the APRN this week to start my 3 month diet trial and an appt. for my psch. eval. Everything seems to be moving along well and I am quite excited, nervous, but excited. It's a journey I have waited much to long to start.
