12-9-06

My surgery was at 1:15 PM on 12-4-06 by Dr. Randal Baker, my excellent surgeon. All went well without complications.  The first 6 hrs postop were pretty miserable, but the nurses were ready with appropriate medications to keep me comfortable. My husband left about 7:30 PM and they had me up walking the halls by 10 PM. At midnight my catheter was removed and the rest of the night was shared by my PCA pump, walking the halls and trying to pee (finally accomplished about 7:30 am).  My walking buddy was turned off and they switched me to oral pain meds and started me on sugar-free instant breakfast - 1 oz/hr. By noon I had gotten in 4 oz and tolerated the pain meds. I was discharged at 2 PM, home by 4 and very tired. I've only had to take the "strong" stuff at night to help me sleep. I'm getting pretty good at meeting the protein and water requirements and even cooked dinner for my husband last night (he's been so good to me and doesn't deserve to starve).

My weight at my 2 week preop appointments was 265#.  Day of surgery-257#. This morning it was 246#, only 5 days post op. Movement is slow and a little painful, but manageble.
