One week to surgery

Oct 01, 2009

This process actually began in Houston about five years ago with my insurance not covering WLS.  A bit over a year ago BCBSIL/HMO would say they would cover it if it was medically neccessary.  Moving on to go through a year of medically supervised weight loss, nutritionist monthly, cardiac, pulmanary and psychiatric clearance all without knowing if surgery would be approved.  Knowing if it was not approved I would be on a road to slow painful death.  So many docs over the years have looked at me as a ticking time bomb.  Finally there was a new policy definition in the mail that did not exclude WLS.  Then there was a very bumpy submission then approval for surgery.  Next came a very sureal and almost outer limits stall, dodge and dance by my surgeon whose department wants to discontinue high risk surgeries.  So here we have the ticking time bomb on one hand and then on the other a very graphic potrayal of complications by my surgeon before signing the consent form.  Nine thirty am to three pm going through the drama with the sugeon that had my wife crying, his resident crying and me tearing up then on to a dietician, anesthesiology, blood, urine and chest xray.  Shopping to go on liquid diet which is not so bad as long as I am not out and about.
