WHAT SHOULD I DO????
May 30, 2009
I am 65 years old and morbidly obese. I was convinced by my PCP to have the lap band surgery. We (my husband, daughter and I) went to 3 different seminars to help us decide which I would be most comfortable with to have the surgery. I decided on The Ohio State University Bariatric Clinic -- mainly because my kidney transplant was done there and they have all my medical records for the past 5 years. I was scheduled to do the Sleep clinic because of sleep apnea. I failed that test - I could not sleep for the required number of minutes. I did quit breathing several times so it will depend upon the doctor and insurance if I need the CPAP. I went to the bariatric clinic yesterday planning to have the lap band done as soon as possible. Then they really threw me a curved ball.....They are recommending the Y bypass surgery. I am so confused right now I don't know what to do. They have very legimate reasons to recommend the bypass; but I am not sure of myself and this is not reversible. I know I have to drop many pounds and drop them quickly. I have : sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholestrol, diabetes, OA, and my knees and ankles hurt all the time. I am trying to get all the information I can to help me decide what to do. I would like your opinions and suggestions. What would you do in my place.......Thanks
