Kayakgirl, you have forced me from the lurker corner to the floor!  I have been lurking here since January.struggling with the same issue.  At a 'stabilized weight' of 257, my BMI was in the 40.something range.  I had been what I thought was a healthy fat person.  Then when I turned 50, my Dr. told me I had hypertension.  I asked...but I have been overweight for years, why now?  She said as you age your body can't take that extra weight..so I thought, there's a pill for that, right?  Then at 51 I was diagnosed with sleep apena, and I thought...there's a machine for that?  Now I am wearing size 11W shoes, and can only buy what I need at one place...well, there's a shoe for that, right?  My weight is beginning to effect how I can just leave the house and walk for 5 miles, or travel without having to haul around my CPAP.  I thought WLS can't be for me?  What about all those superobese people out there who are in worse shape.  Well the Ontario Government recognizes WLS as a medical intervention that will save them millions in the long run, and It is much more effective that I seek help now, before I get to the superobese stage where the intervention becomes more complicated. There was a terrific article written on the main tab from March 10 by Tammy titled, Do I really need surgery to loose the weight.  She identifies WLS as a medical intervention, like surgery to remove a tumor so the cancer doesn't spread.  My real push came from my sister, she entered the program at 60, 18 months ago.  She was 319 and 5ft3, no real health issues except for hip and apena.  She is now 160lbs., and I believe has stabilized at that weight for the rest of her life.  It is easy to get caught up in the before and after photos and focus on the cosmetic benefits of being thin, but it really is not about that.  It is about getting a tool to aid you with weight management to halt those health issues that will creep up and snag us all.

I myself am mentally/emotionally & physically ready for my medical intervention, at 55 years old and 239 lbs. now,( ht 5ft7), I am scheduled for a VSG on April 12.  I need to turn this horse around now, while I still have the strength.

Thanks for getting me outta the corner Kayakgirl, and like other posters have said...keep on clicking on lots of tabs and read, ponder, read some more and think.
