You folks are so very kind and considerate!
Yes, I am feeling a bit apprehensive or anxious – it’s almost as if I’m in a plain old-fashioned style “daze.” I have been wanting to do this surgery for so long, yet only since June 2004 have I become absolutely convicted in my belief that this is the right thing to do. For me.
Dr. Reines performed this surgery on a friend, and I had not known nor seen her in the nine months since her surgery. When I saw her, my jaw dropped. We’d known each other for so long (through think and think, so to speak!) that I was just overwhelmed. She told me in the most honest and sincere voice, “you’ve got to do this.” No words of drama, no words of elation, no highs or lows. Just the fact that it was entirely life-changing for her, and she’d known how I suffered. Because she’d been there, too.
So, here I am. Footing the bill myself (referred to as “self-paying”), as MAMSI Life and Health Insurance – golly gee- has an “exclusion” on their policy that they won’t cover this. After several appeals, they actually had the nerve to say “you have exhausted all of your appeals” and told me nothing else would be considered. But they DO think that I should have the surgery; and they hope that I will go through with it anyway. So, I am.
Each participant in the surgery (doctor, hospital and anesthesia) require separate payment. The only one that will let you pay after and offer a payment plan is the anesthesiologist. Which, interestingly enough, is the cheapest part. The doctor required cash payment (yes, cash), and the hospital will take a credit card ($14,000 flat fee).
However, at this point, I simply decided to view this as an investment. In my life, in my future.
Thanks to everyone who has sent such words of encouragement. I will check back in as soon as I am able!
