My journey

Jun 25, 2009

My struggles with weight began after highschool. I was always thin growing up but it seems that curvy figures are great until you get a little older. I was a competitive professional ballroom dancer until my mid twenties and that always helped me keep my weight down without ever having to think about it. Once I stopped dancing though it became increasingly difficult for me to keep my weight down. Then when I turned 30 things in my life became difficult for many years. Our house burned down, both of my in-laws passed away, my mom and grandma died and I was one of their primary caregivers while they were sick, I had a pulmonary embolism, a baby, a severe bout of depression, and then was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I seemed like the weight just kept going up and up and no matter what I did I couldn't keep it off. My family is prone to weight related issues and at 35 I was already heading down the path of diabetes. I just wanted more for my life. I was in constant pain and discomfort and couldn't get out and do what I wanted to with my kids. I knew something had to change. So on May 9, 2009 I had a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. It's been a challenging road these first few months but hopefully things will get easier and easier.
