What a sweet beginning....

Mar 05, 2010

My surgery was on January 27, 2010.. a day that will never be forgotten.  Hard to believe it is now my new "Birth" day... and it was also my Mom's.  Now tell me.. she HAS to be looking over me!

The surgery went quite well with hardly any pain.  For the month of February, I lost 31 pounds.. and now the 5th of March, an additional 10 pounds.  Poof.. 41 pounds gone forever!  NOW I am wondering how much I really can lose... My physician would like me at 175 pounds.  I am now, 213.  Thirty eight pounds more?  Amazing... !!!  That is hard to believe!  My weight on January 27th was 254.  Now I AM truly surprised and amazed ... HAPPY too...!!!

Hopefully, soon I will have a new computer at home.. but for the meantime.. will jot notes when I can..

Have a great day!

The BIG day is coming !!!

Jan 05, 2010

It is the New Year, 2010, and I am so excited about having surgery which is scheduled for January 27th.  This date is so special in that this was my Mom's birthday.  I could not believe when I heard the choice of dates to choose, the 26th or the 27th.  This surely is a sign that Mom is looking after me in heaven!

This past year has been quite busy in preparing for this day.  It all began on January 9, 2009.

On this day, my legs felt heavy for some reason.  Having been food shopping, I was emptying my trunk of groceries and placing them on the landing of my stoop.  Standing on the step, my leg gave out and took a tumble.  It seemed like my ankle was sticking out, so be sure I went and had xrays.  The xrays did not show a break, but the doctor was not the physician I usually see.  Swollen and hard to work, went back and saw my physician.  More xrays, it showed a bone spur.  To be on the safe side, went for an MRI which revealed, a bone spur, ligment damage and possibly arthritis developing from an old trama injury. To make this shorter, my doctor placed my ankle in a gel cast for 3.5 weeks.  We spoke about my medical condition(s) and he asked once again, "Would I see someone regarding a lap band procedure."  Since I truly respected my doctor, I said I would go for a 'consultation' but I did not agree.  I felt that my problem was not one of eatting volumes of food.  Also, stressed the importance of going through my own hospital (employee for 28 years)Note:  I am a Type 2 Diabetic.  Even though he preferred seeing the physicians in his network, I only felt comfort and trust in my own.
I was exactly correct in my intuition!  Dr Herron agreed that lapband surgery would not help the cure of my diabetes that only RNY would give me the chance.  It made sense, it would bypass the pancreas.

My appointment was set, Janury 14th for a consultation with Dr Herron, cast and all, I kept an open mind and would listen to his opinion and options.  Dr Herron and his office staff are WONDERFUL.. My decision was made.  I elected RNY.
After a year on Atkins, years of Weight Watchers, calorie counting, fasting.. I was ready.  Food just does not like me.
To ensure that this was for "me", I questioned my friend, tinkerbelle025' and another friend, Leslie.. and if anyone else who had the procedure, I would question. My mentor is tinkerbelle, I am SO proud of her!  I knew the next year would be appointments and tests for this procedure, along with followups with my diabetes.  It was.  Since I am 57 years old, I had every inch of my body tested.  YES, every inch (giggles).

My next appointment was with Rebecca Solomon, bariatric nutritionist.  She was very informative, with a very sweet personality.  I only wish that insurance would cover the use of a nutritionist on a consistant basis.

In March had my yearly OB/GYN appointment which revealed thickening of my endometrial wall.  This involved having to have a biopsy to make sure it was not endometrial cancer. An ultrasound and the biopsy revealed, I am fine!  Had a mammography, fine!

Part of the requirement is to seek the services of a psychologist or psychiatrist.  Through the rain, walking in a cast, visited a suggested psychologist.  Not saying what his name was, chemistry between us did not match.  He was obnoxious, created doubt, said  bariatric surgery would not work for me because I liked ice cream too much in the past.. Haven't we all?  There is more to this story, but he told me even though he feels bariatric surgery will not work for me, he will approve the surgery.  If anyone reading this would like to have more information, please feel free to message me.  I wrote a letter to my surgeon and explained what had happened.  That is what matters, is not holding it in, but expressing in a professional manner conduct of another.

Since my white cell count is usually high, and my red cell count right below normal levels, by my primary doctor's suggestion is to make sure bloods are fine.  I made an appointment with a hematologist/oncologist to speak about my concerns and bariatric surgery.  After having multiple CT Scans (4), the counts are normal for me.  The only thing that was revealed after another ultrasound is that I have gall stones.  White and Red Cell counts are normal for me.

Last but not least, had to grin and bear it, were having an endoscopy and colonoscopy.  For years, I was avoiding those two procedures, but every year there was a physical condition that had to be taken care of first. The first appointment I had with a gastroenterologist was an experience in itself.  I should have decide against going forward when he came out that he is totally against bariatric surgery and a diet should solve all my problems.  The next appointment was for an endoscopy that ended up taking 3 hours!  He found all sort of problems, magnifying those that were found and made it sound like instead of a raisin it was a prune!  Reflux, eroded esophagus (1/3), erosion in the curvature and base of the stomach, hernia, etc.
NOW, how can I have all that and have no symptoms.. hmmmm... Allowing my body to relax from all the tests, xrays, etc. I scheduled an appointment with a gastroenterologist within the medical center I work for.  Explaining the situation that was previously experienced, showing the results from the tests, my instincts were correct.  A week later I had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy and it only took 45 minutes for both!  Results, FINE!  and totally supportive of my having the surgery.

It goes to show, follow your instincts!  One man's opinion is not always the answer!

2009 was a year of tests, trials and tribulations.  Tested for swine flu twice, diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knees, a torn miniscus in my right knee, bursitis in the left.  8 falls.. 5 cortisone shots in the knee... the flu 3 times, and lastly, samenella!!!!  BUT, I know 2010 is MY year!

Don't ever let something stop you for what will give you a better quality of life!
