1 Week After Gastic Bypass Surgery

Jun 15, 2010

It has been (almost) one week since my surgery date and I have lost a total of 30 lbs.  I have not vomited at all, and have very little nausea.  I do not have Dumping Syndrome with vomitting or diahrea but I do occasionally get the following symptoms which are attributed to Dumping Syndrome: high pulse, hot flash, and sudden dizziness or weakness.  Usually I can feel this coming on and I lay down on the couch with the fan pointed on me on high.  As someone with hormonal imbalances, I have had these types of "spells" before, however they were labelled as "hot flashes".

I am on a variety of medications and I am able to take them all, just not all at the same time with huge gulps of water like before!  I take one pill at a time, with a small sip of water, and leave a few minutes in between.  I have many night medications and it takes up to 30 minutes to take all my night medications.  I usually take my night medications with a 4 oz protein drink.

I am not disappointed with having the surgery, I just fear the mounds of flab that will soon appear, especially my upper arms, which were awful to begin with.

Most people who have had gastric bypass surgery say they do not feel cravings or desires for the unhealthy foods that they used to eat.  This is NOT true for me, although I wish it were.  I see commercials for pizza and sometimes think, "Darn!  That looks really good!  I wish I could have some!".  So it's not, for me, that the desire for these foods is gone - it's just that I am unable to have them.  I hope, over time, after continuing to eat healthier my cravings will be reduced and that I will also be able to balance foods- OK so pizza is high in fat, only have 1/2 slice of thin crust...or get a Lean Cuisine Pizzaa and have 1/2....you know?  There are always other options.

I was supposed to go back to class (5-9 pm on tuesday/thursdays) tonight, but I decided not to.  I just emailed the professor.  Hopefully he will be okay with that since it is a medical reason, but I did miss the last class too, due to surgery.  I made sure that my professor knew about my surgery at the beginning of this session, and I supplied him with  a doctor's note for the class that I missed already.  I see my surgeon on Thursday morning, so I will be able to get a doctor's note from there and take it to my professor in class thursday night.
