My goal was to get this weight off by the time I turned 30. In October 2009 I was watching TV and saw a Lap band commercial.  I decided to order the DVD. While I waited for the shipment, I started joining blogs and doing research. I was 5' 7" and 307 pounds and just plain tired of the whole thing. Losing weight took up too much mind space. Every moment of every day it seemed like I was stressing about how much weight was carrying.

I was overweight since childhood. I tried every fad diet in the world with the exception of probably weight watchers. I went from 300 to 260 doing no carb in 2005. As the no carb lifestyle got bashed over time and the Kraft South beach frozen dinners went obsolete, I started gaining all the weight back. I developed high blood pressure and pre-diabetes.

In Jan 2010 I went to my seminar, was sure WLS was right for me and started the journey.  In July 2010, I failed nutrition and was declined surgery. I had not gained weight but did not lose weight either in 30 days therefore the nutritionist felt I was not a good candidate for surgery. I disagreed, was discouraged and said forget it. In January 2011, I decided to go to another WLS center. The second program was far better than the first. I was more prepared and equipped to change my habits. Also, the seminar was 4 hours versus 45 minutes at the first program.  I was more equipped to decide which surgery was best. To my surprise I decided I would do better to have RNY and not Lapband.  My surgeon performs both RNY and Lapband. Based on his patients, those who had RNY lost more weight overall and overtime stayed down.  I passed nutrition by September and had my surgery Oct 17, 2011, exactly 6 months shy of turning 30.

I had no pain, no nausea or anything. The only discomfort was my IV. It was in my hand and was so uncomfortable my hand swelled up. They removed it and put it in my other wrist.   Other than that, its been stellar. I am losing weight and following all the instructions given. I am 5 days out and cant wait to go to the gym so I can tone up while I lose.  So by my 30th birthday, I should be well on my way to optimal health.
