Almost a Week Out

Mar 16, 2010

I'm six days out and have lost 7 pounds since my surgery.  Today's weight: 230.

My mid-day BP was 99/65.  I hoping I will be off the BP meds by the end of the month.

I thought I would make a list of things that are making my life easier at this stage (Stage I):
broth in the big pour containers (32 and 48 oz)-Swanson makes low sodium/low fat
Tupperware Sheer Midgets - have measuring lines on inside, perfect for 1-2 oz of liquid and you can carry them around the house with the lids and they won't spill, also I don't get as bored drinking the same thing all the time
In and Out Carryout Tray - easy to carry all the little midgets and stuff in
4 oz ceramic ramikin - perfect to heat up 2-3 oz of broth
plastic baby spoons - it's impossible to eat too much in one bite with one of these things
1/2 cup Glad or Ziploc bowls - just right for the 2-3 oz jello servings
vitamin and med schedule - made on computer before I went to the hospital, grid large enough to write in the times
little spiral notebook - keep track of BP and fluid intake (amount and times)
small disposable sippy cups - Zoopals makes these, you can get them at the grocery store, I like to have these next to my bed for the middle of the night, I think Dixie makes a larger coffee one but it's so not neccessary, I can't even finish one during the night

Another thing that has been a lifesaver is taking the surgeon's shopping list and purchasing everything before I went to the hospital.  It has made it easier for my DH to take care of me.  I bought all the chewable and liquid vitamins as well as Propel Zero, SoBe LifeWater and Vitamin Waters.  I actually started buying stuff when I got the list 9 months ago at my first support group meeting.  Now I have a nice selection.  I also looked on-line for samples of different protein shakes.  I have been warned that your tastes change after surgery, so little packets from on-line or health food stores are perfect.  It is expensive to buy the big containers that I might not like when I get to that stage (Thursday, REJOICE!!)  I marked them all with a Sharpie so I or my DH knows which store they came from, if I find one I like.

As far as I'm concerned, easy is the key for me, because this process is NOT!

My surprises:
**Eventhough I'm on the liquid stage, I have found that there are some things I do not like the taste of.
**It is more difficult than I thought to eat slower and so little at a time.
**The pain was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
**I had second thoughts as they rolled me into the OR.  (biggest surprise of all)  People had told me they did this and I didn't believe them.  I really panicked as the nurse was rolling me in.  "am I doing the right thing?", "did I really try hard enough to lose weight without putting myself through this?", "what if I die?", "it's gonna really hurt and I hate pain"
**I miss food more than I thought I would.

I have another good book with recipes and some indepth information: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Well after Weight Loss Surgery.  I can't wait to try some of the recipes.

I'm so pleased that I have so much support.  Everybody wants to come over and visit but I had so many people visit me in the hospital and it really tired me out.  I'm hoping I can have lunch (water) next week with one or two of them.~mo
