2nd and 3rd Appointments

Jun 18, 2011

Here's a quick update. At my second appointment I was down 7 pounds (I started at 240). The appointment was pretty routine, I saw the team (nurse, nutritionist, and surgeon). I noticed I was has been feeling a little anxious while on the job and there was a tendency to eat more during the week. There's also been tension about possible layoffs at the job. But that possibility seems to have passed for my department.

Between my 2nd and 3rd clinic appointments, I attended a local support group meeting. I enjoyed the experience for the most part and I met some nice folks who had a lot of wisdom and and encouragement for us "pre-opers". As will any group there are some who can talk too much and may not give the most accurate information, but all in all it was good.

My just had my 3rd appointment yesterday. After the support group meeting I had a lot of questions for the clinic team. The nutritionist doesn't seem to think that the biotin will really helps all that much with the hair loss. It's what bariatric patients go through because of the rapid weight loss no matter what. She didn't speak against it either; as she said "it doesn't hurt". I also asked about drinking juices such as Naked or similar products. She stated it's better to actually eat the vegetables since your getting more fiber that way. I'll asked about that again when discussing things like full liquid choices.

Visiting with the surgeon was routine. I told him I decided on the RNY over the sleeve and we went through all my reports to make sure I didn't need any additional tests or study's. The best part of the appointment was with the nurse. I asked how long the approval process takes after the last (4th) visit. She informed me that there is no processs, no paperwork. At the 4th visit the surgery date is arranged. So that was very exciting to hear. As a matter of fact, I left the that day with a date for my fourth appointment, the pre-op class AND my surgery!! So the only real papers I need to complete are FMLA forms for HR.

So my surgery date is August 1st; how cool is that!! I never thought the process would move that fast. The biggest challenge I have now is staying in the present. I need to focus what's happening right in front of me and not take my mind too far in the future. No need to think about what I might look like after plastic surgery.
