Post Op

Mar 03, 2011

Well, this is my first blog on this site and my first time blogging post op.  I had Roux-en Y and have been doing well but not feeling the best.  That is to say, I came thru surgery with "flying colors" according to the surgeon.  I was VERY groggy on the day of surgery... not much pain though because they kept me in a blissful drug induced fog.  With the tube thru my nose and down my throat and into my belly, I had NO desire to talk.  I was given chipped ice and that is about it.  First day post op, I felt not as out of it but VERY uncomfortable and felt pain.  I lay in  bed for only a short while but around 3AM that morning I got up and sat in the recliner chair.  The wonderful, helpful recliner chair was my friend.  The controls that lifted me up in that chair helped me stand to my feet and while in it I slept much better.

I walked around and tried to move and pass gas which was stubborn and decidedly going home with me.  My mother and sister took me home on an overexaggeratedly bumpy ride. Living about 2 hours away, we had to stop and let me walk around and get some circlulation and stretch.  Once home, I was able to sit up for a while with my family before going quietly into that miserable night.  Another miserable night but around 3AM I realized that sitting up is the best option for me.  I propped myself up on 3 pillows and had a fourth pillow to lean on, took my beautiful medicine and went to sleep.

Now, with the 3rd day post op under my belt, or should I say G-tube, I am moving around much better.  I still have no appetite but I am drinking more fluids than I was when I first came home.  I am drinking decaf coffee, water and sugar-free popsicles and even a few sips of protein shake.  I need to drink more and get my fluids in.  I KNOW this... but it is kind of difficult when you are not even hungry in the least.  Well, this is my experience thus far.  More to come!  Oh and you will be very happy to know, I have been passing gas today.  Yes, I know, you must be SO excited for me! :-)
