Question:
Is an epidural ever used for open RNY?

When I wake up from general anesthesia, I am violently ill for about 24 hours. If it takes a normal person 2 hours to wake up, it takes me about 6 hours and even then, I am terribly groggy for several more hours. I am scheduled for surgery on Dec. 4th and would love to be able to have something other than a general anesthestic.    — Linda C. (posted on October 9, 2001)

I had an epidural, but it was just to control the pain after I woke up from surgery. I still had to get the general anesthesia for the surgery itself. I always get sick and vomit from the anesthesia, but I made this fact abundantly clear to my doc and everyone else, and they were able to give me something before I woke up (some anti-nausea medication in my IV) and it kept me from getting sick. Talk it over with your surgeon, I'm sure you're not the first of his patients with this particular problem. He probably has some options for you.
