Question:
Daily Cost of Private Room is $225 at Westchester Med Center

I just completed my pre-admission tsts at Westchester Medical Center for surgery 1/10/2002. I asked for a private room - they told me it was $225 per night EXTRA - and they only had one in the entire hospital! I thought private rooms were common and only about $40 per night extra? Am I asking for the wrong thing? Anyone else have this experience?    — Kathy J. (posted on January 2, 2002)

That is utterly ridiculous! Damn some really fine hotels are less than that! I believe here where I live in Maine...it would have been $25 extra per night. [/]IF[/] they had the room. I was fortunate enough to have a private room the whole time free...it was this teensy room that 2 beds would not have fit in. Lucky me!!

That does sound a little high, but I think I would go ahead and pay it. I BEGGED for a private room from the date I knew I was having surgery. I called the hospital almost weekly to remind them. When it was all said and done they were moving people to rooms so fast there wasn't time to check and even though I was planning on paying whatever it cost... I got screwed. People not asking for the rooms got them!!! Then of course I had the room mate from hell. Don't get me wrong I felt sorry for her but all she did was cry "help me, someone please help me" ALL NIGHT long. Then the next night her husband stayed in the room with us which was a little awkward, but I was feeling okay and he was there to deal with her cries. So I was up most nights walking because I couldn't take it. No amount of begging would get them to move me either. So again I say, PAY THE DIFFERENCE!

This sounds crazy. Although I have not had WLS yet, St. Vincent's where I will be staying ONLY has private rooms for their Bariatric patients. While in the hospital for childbirth, my out of pocket for a private room was $20 per day which ended up being $60 for my stay.

I think it depends on what state you live in. In NYC that is not high at all. Private rooms unless medically necessary are not something most insurance companies will pay for. Its an extra and will cost you and there is no guareente you will get your request. I had one two years ago, this time with WLS a semi-private. Smaller private hospitals can accommendate a private room situation easier then bigger hospitals can so it seems. I am surprised some got rooms for $20 extra a night, I wounder if they had really good insurance policies or maybe that was covered more completely in their states. Wish you luck though if you can swing it go for it.

My private room was only $15 per night. I am amazed that a hospital would charge $225. For that amount of money it had better be like staying in a luxury hotel!

Perhaps I was the exception to the rule... but I had a semi-private room when I went for my surgery. I didn't find it a bit of trouble. Of course, it was at a Bariatric Treatment Center instead of a hospital (EVERYBODY there was having the same surgery!) The day of my surgery, I was put into a room with another woman. The first day and a half, I was so 'out of it' from the Demerol, I didn't pay any attention to the fact that she was there. She left the next evening. The following afternoon, another woman post-op was brought into my room. SHE was so out of it from the Demerol, I didn't hear anything from her either..lol. Of course, as it was VERY far from my home, I didn't have any visitors to deal with.. and she only had her husband a couple times.. and a son once. For the exorbitant amount of the 'private' room that they're asking at Westchester.... Hey.. it's only 4 days. But that's just MY opinion... :-) Good luck..and God Bless...

Sounds like a rip off! However the time I had my bypass was the ONLY time I've ever had a semi private room before. I NEVER will do that again. I'll pay the extra. I had roommates from hell. Read my profile for more if you are interested. It was a %&%^^%&ing nightmare!
