Question:
How long do you lose your hair?

My hair is slowly coming out, I'm 4mos post- op. I consume 80 or more gms of protein daily. I just want to know how long will I have to put up with the falling hair. Thanks, Beth    — Elizabeth C. (posted on December 29, 2002)

I am almost 9 months post op too and still losing hair. Not quite as much as around 5-8 months but the amount is still noticable. I am hoping it will stop soon. One good thing is that I can tell from the way my scalp feels that there is new growth. Good luck!!

I lost mine from month 3 to month 6 post-op. It started growing back around month 7 and now at month 10, its almost back to where it was pre-op. Best advice, get a short cute doo and no one will n otice the loss.

I lost mine from the end of month three until the end of month six. I think I lost about 1/3 of it, maybe more, but I had GOBS to begin with. I took 2500mcgs of Biotin from GNC...didn't help with the loss really, but it helps make what you have left shiny and healthy.

I think I am one of the more fortunate ones. I noticed my hair shedding for about a week. Then the next week it stopped. I think the worst is over for me.

I had falling-out hair from month 3 to month 7 post-op. I've been taking Biotin 800mg daily since around month 3. I'm still taking it and I'm almost 8 months out. It's inexpensive and I believe it has helped and will continue to help. Hugs, Joy

I started losing hair in 3rd month. I had long mid-back hair and the loss looked worse because the hairs were so long. So I cut my hair to just above my shoulders. Im 5 months postop and still losing. Ive noticed that the hairs that fall out are hairs that just stop growing. I know this, because I color my hair every month and the ones that fall out have no "root" of my natural haircolor.

From Barbara Thompsons book: "It starts usually around month 3-4 and falls out usually for 3-4 months." BUT, then it stops and it all grows back. I also read somewhere that we have a thin layer of fat underneath our scalp, and for some, they shed that fat, which is why hair falls out. I've also heard that protein doesn't have anyhting to do with it and that is why people don't see results from products. Just a theory,...who knows?

I started losing my hair around 4 months and it pretty much stopped at 6 months. It will stop and believe me you won't lose all your hair, it sure feels like it for a while. I see all the new growth now and it looks a little funny. I think the average hair loss lasts 6-8 weeks, at least in the support groups I go to that is about average. Sometimes maybe 12 weeks.....

I starting losing it around 3 months and it stopped at about 6 months. Its very disheartening at thte time, but it will end. I found nothing like more protein or shampoos would help...it just had to run its course.

I also lost hair post-op months 3-6. I now have a gazillion inch-long alfalfa sprouts! But they don't bother me. I'm glad I know my hair will be healthy and thick again (granted, it will take forever for the sprouts to catch up with the length of my hair). :o)

My hair loss started just shortly before my 3 months post-op date. I'm now approaching 6 months and seeing less and less hair in the shower, on the floor, on my pillow, etc. From the beginning I tried the Nioxin shampoo, Biotin, the Hair, Skin & Nails vitamins. Nothing helped. It just has to run its course. I do know it's growing again though 'cause I colored my hair about 2 weeks ago and I already have roots showing (barely! but I'll take what I can get). Hang in there! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -100lbs.
