Question:
Is 150 cm's to much to bypass.......

Or does it depend on your weight...I'm 317 if that matters. Thanks and input would be great. — luckyflowers (posted on January 11, 2003)

You mean, nutritionally? No. Heck no. I've hosted 3 people in the last year with 150's who revised to more distal to get the last of the wt off. It works quite well for some, not so well for others. My drastically distal works well for me, not so well for others. But is it too much? No, it's easily supplemented.

My doctor bypassed 150 cm, called it a "modified distal". So far (9 mo out) everything is good. I have lost 100 pounds so far.

I should have read the other answers first. I just want to mention- John R is practically a saint in his eating- anyone following his Q&A posts knows he is a stickler for protocol. So while 75 cm may be great for him, it may not be right for you. Plus men lose weight at a substantially faster rate.

Thanks...I guess *G*. However, I didn't post here about my 75 cm bypass - it was to a question "Has anyone around 400 lbs. had only 100 cm's bypassed...."
I would never presume to judge whether a length of bypass is too much. That is the decision of the surgeon for the most part.
The surgeons at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania - Dr. Steven Raper and Dr. Noel Williams - have pretty much standardized their WLS. Both of them bypass 75cm and the only variations they do is in the size of the pouch. They have had mucho success with the way they perform the RNY's so I'm not going to argue with them.
(P.S. Actually, I did get yelled out by my nutritionist for not eating enough. I was doing 500-600 calories a day and she wants me at 1000. I told her that I'd shoot for 800 at this point *G*)

Nope! I had 150 cm's bypassed and am doing great! (109lbs at 9 months.) My surgeon called it a long-limbed bypass. She bases the length of the bypass on the patients BMI.

I was 319 and had 157mm bypassed. I'm 20 months out and still in the "high overweight range" bmi. But at least I've dropped around 84% of my excess weight. Wish I had had more bypassed. Sigh...
