Question:
I need all suggestions possible to.........

help me make my knee better. I am a little over 4 weeks post op and since I can't take my anti-inflamatory med, my knee is killing me and Tylenol is just not doing the job. I do put ice on it, but it doesn't seem like it is enough. Are there any other pain meds to help my problem? I want to exercise so bad, but this is my only holdback. Help!!!!    — Mimi S. Maybe you should call your doctor and ask for a prescription for pain med? I'm sure you can take something "light" for the pain. Hopefully as you lose weight, your knee will stop hurting. Mine did! ~J

When Vicodin gave me trouble after a non WLS related surgery in June, I was allowed to take Vioxx which is used for bursitis and other joint issues as well. I double checked with my bariatric surgeon before I took it and she said it was fine. You might check into it for your knee issues. Good luck!

I am not sure why or what anti-inflammatory medication you cannot take. But I do know there are many to choose from. From old standards such as ibuprofen(tablet) & ketoprofen(capsule) to new ones such as celebrex(capsule) & vioxx(tablet). And many others. Definately ask your Dr if there is something you can have. Good luck to you. Hope your pain subsides soon.

Have you tried any of the topical analgesics like extra-strength Ben Gay, Icy Hot, Aspricream, etc.? Many of them work quite well!

Talk to your doctor about lidocane (sp) patches they are big enough to fit the knee and just stick on like a cold wet band-aid. I used them for my neck pain and they provided some minor releif.

When I was about 6 months post-op I was allowed to go back to my daily regimen of Bextra 20 mg to help with ongoing pain of bursitis in my left hip & knee. I am now 10 months post op and continue to take it each day. Hopefully I am not doing any damage to my pouch! Call your surgeon, he or she will know best! Good Luck!

When I was having muscular pain 2 weeks post-op my doc said to take liquid motrin. I would ask your surgeon first, but I've had not problems taking it. I always take it after a meal, too, to help prevent any problems.

Check with your surgeon. He may allow you to get back on your regular med. for pain relief. You may need to be sure and take it with food. I was okayed to take Vioxx 25 mg. after surgery, and Ibuprofen, if needed. I was not taking it every day - only about 2-3 days per month. It could be a trade off in his eyes - let you take the med and possibly have problems with the pouch, but be able to exercise, or don't take any NSAIDS and be in pain and not able to exercise, but decrease the risk of problems with the pouch. The newer meds need only to be taken once a day, and that alone decreases the risk of irritating the pouch. Ask your surgeon.

I have extreme pain in my hips, knees & lower back. Nothing over the counter takes it away, but I use TYLENOL ARTHRITIS PAIN and it helps... doesn't take it away, but eases it a lot. You could possibly crush them up to take them.

My doctor allowed any tylenol product, but not much else. I took Tylenol arthritis and it gave me enough relief that I could exercise. Prior to my surgery I had such knee and leg pain. I had lost feeling on the outside of my right leg and bottom of my right foot. I began walking 1/4 of a mile and worked my way up. Just get in a routine. I've regained all feeling in my leg and can easiy walk 2 miles. I'm 10 mos. post-op and down 141 lbs.

I was taking vioxx for arthritis in my lower back pre-op and quit as a new post-op. The pain upon waking up was like night and day and nothing else, especially tylenol products helped. My surgeon/PCP allowed me to go back on vioxx (once a day), take with food, and I am monitored. I run the risk of a pouch ulcer however, after trying to get thru without the vioxx, it is now a risk I am willing to take. So far, after almost a year of taking vioxx every day, I am OK. Discuss it with your surgeon/PCP and decide what is best for you-you should not have to be in pain, even as a post-op.
