Question:
Has anyone continue to have pain & vomit after eating solids 7 wks post-op?

all I seem to be able to eat without pain is soup, yogart and cottage cheese. I have tried fish and chicken and always chewed it very well but it did not matter. Is this normal? Am I expecting too much too soon?    — Lisa D. (posted on November 4, 2003)

You could have a stricture. I am 11 weeks out from surgery and have just now been able to start eating solids. I had an EGD with a balloon dilatation on October 1 and then again on October 31 as I was only able to eat soups (and even got sick with that sometimes). You should call your surgeon and be checked out.

I had TONS of vomiting and stomach pain problems for the first six to eight months... I was checked for a stricture, too... and that wasn't it. I thought I was chewing well... and everything that came back up was like really well chewed... but it turns out I was eating too much!! Even more than two bites was too much when it came to readjusting to chicken, fish, steak, etc. I had to limit myself to one bite of chicken, fish, etc., and get my other two or three bites from some other protien source to round out my meals. I ended up not eating chicken for almost a year.I can handle it quite well, now... but... for a while there, it just didn't work. I discovered I was also eating too fast. Once I slowed down (waiting about three minutes between bites) and kept the bites to a minimum, it worked out well. It's hard to wait that long, but... my tummy needed it!! It STILL, at 22 months post op, takes me about 30 minutes to an hour to eat one piece of chicken, two tablespoons of hi-pro mashed potatoes, and one tablespoon of green beans!! I may be weird! LOL! Good Luck!

you have some good advice posted to your question - however, having just gone through a self-medicating episode that was very destructive to me because i had developed a stricture at 4 weeks, i would urge you to consult your surgeon and be assessed. i vomited for 13 days before telling my surgeon and was incredibly ill. it took a week in the hospital because i had let it go so long - but an endoscopy and a dilation solved the problem. it's 6 weeks out, 48 hours after the procedure - i'm home and doing well. don't hurt yourself - ask them!

I still cant eat meats, or some veggies. I am 3 mo's post op. I was checked for a stricture, but none found. My surgeon told me to slow down between bites, eat smaller bites and chew it more. Well, I tried all that, and still I cant do it. I CAN tolerate ground turkey, steak ums & lunch meat, sometimes, but that is it! Even fish gets me sometimes, but Chicken, beef or pork, NO WAY!!! I did try turkey bacon tonight, cut up really small in some scrambled eggs, and it went ok. (it is very low in fat and high in protein, and pretty cheap!) GOOD LUCK
