Question:
ADVICE PLEASE!! Skin extremely dry since surgery

I used to have beautiful, hydrated skin before surgery. My skin now peels and itches. No amount of Eucerin Lotion helps. I have also tried cocoa butter creme, baby oil, Nivea creme, Aloe Vera creme, Vaseline Intensive Care and moisturizing body soaps. Thanks!!    — carpediem (posted on November 14, 2003)

I was also dry after surgery. Just keep putting lotion on, a lot! I use Kerri, I think that's how you spell it. You will eventually become hydrated again when you increase your fluid intake. Good luck to you. Kim 7mo out 120#'s down.

Have always had dry skin so post-op was not a suprise. We were started on 400 IU dry form at surgery, then moved to 800 IU. 800 IU is heart healthy for the general public. Since we malabsorb fats/oils (to a degree), we should be supplementing in dry form, anyway. I am very distal, so I finally moved up to 1600 IU per day (remember I get nothing from food)and now my skin is better than before. I also have to use lotions, drink water and keep plenty of protein supplement on board, but moving the E up was the final fix, I think. I'm not saying YOU should take 1600! But trying 400 IU or 800 IU is safe for normies, and we are malabsorbing at least part of any from food sources.

Yes, up your water and if you're drinking any caffeine you need to cut it out. The caffeine dehydrates. Although I drank plenty of fluids (tea & ice tea) they had caffeine in them. My first warning signs of dehydration was very dry cracked hands. I used every lotion on the market. Then I noticed once in a while I would get a little dizzy getting up from a sitting or laying down position. The final stage for me was when I noticed my lips were a little dark and I actually felt thirsty. Well I learned my lesson when I fainted on my way to work on the train. I was 10 months post-op. So I now make sure to get plenty of decaf fluids everyday and I can really notice it in my skin. Good Luck, Lisa open rny 4/26/02 -155lbs

You need fat in your diet, as that keeps the skin supple. Plus you know, lots of water. There is good fat and bad fat, so do your homework.

Debi, Try Gold Bond Medicated lotion in the green bottle with the red pump. Our Walgreens has a little trial size for .99 Not only is it the only thing I have tried that works, it feels wonderful (Hot, warm, cool, zingy--it's awesome!) It also contains vitamin E, so along with my Mederma for the scars, I believe it is benefiting my scars and stretch marks, too. Good luck! Audra, open RNY 8-7-03, -65 lbs (248/183/140)

Michelle tald ya about the Vit. E, but you may also want to add Coromega (from Vitalady.com)which is a Omega3 Fish Oil supplement. Helps me . . . it's emulsified, so we can absorb at least some of it. Other things that may help . . . flax seed meal (in breads, on salads & cereal, etc), ALA (Alpha Linoic Acid? well, they're fatty acids) supps. And making sure you're eating fat - good fats, like olive oil preferred. YOu may absorb some of 'em.

Drink water, eat fat (non hydrogenated), supplement with cod liver oil and put good oils/lotions on your skin that don't contain alcohol. Feel free to email me concerning brands. Hope this helps!
