Question:
Anyone experienced sharp, acidic, PAINs in their stomach/pouch?

Hello everyone: I am 3 weeks post-op and I'm having a gnawing, acidic pain in the tummy/pouch. I've had it a few times since my surgery. Last time was when I ate something that had a lot of fruit acid in it, like once I had 2 sugar-free, "Whole Fruit" Popsicles and this same pain stayed for like an hour afterwards. Today it's much worse and just excruciating! All I've had today was water, Crystal Light Lemonade and my protein shake. Since it's the weekend I was trying to avoid calling my Doc. I was only able to type this question after taking some Vicodin for the pain. Does anyone know anything about this, why it happens and/or if it's a serious symptom? Thanks so much, Jeanie    — Jeanie R. (posted on July 11, 2004)

Jeanie, you can still have ulcers and reflux problems after this surgery. My doctor advised me to take a pepcid AC everyday for a year after surgery to help prevent it but it might be best for you to call the doctor even though it is the weekend. Pain is a sign that something isn't right.

Some things you can report to your doc when you call him tomorrow.... when did it start? how does water taste? how does it FEEL? do you feel anything in your esophagus? Locate your pouch, roughly. It's higher than you think, between your ribs, below your sternum. Does it hurt when you press in that area? Bowels working normally? Those are all clues you can give him to help him decide what kind of testing or treatment to use for you. Further questions I'd ask: are you transected? were you subject to ulcers before? I was an ulcer sufferer since my teens. Then after surgery, I had a series of marginal ulcers. They felt very different to me. I did not identify the marginal ulcer because it came in a different package. The only time I felt "normal" ulcer type symptoms was when my staple line disrupted and the acid that had been locked away suddenly had access to the pouch. I'm not diagnosing your case, just asking you to collect data to transfer over to your doc.

I had BAD heart burn and acid pains around 3 months post. My doc gave me a prescription for Prevacid that I opened into applesauce. It has no flavor.

I had kind of something like that. I increased my nexium to 2 times a day (after consulting the surgeon) and it helped a lot.
