Question:
Does anyone experience post op leg cramping?

I am 9 months post-op & have been experiencing calf & foot cramps for about 2 months. They mostly occur in the evening & at bedtime. Anybody have these or know what causes them? *OUCH* Thanks for any info.    — squeejlueej (posted on October 22, 2004)

Yes, most deffinitely! I had one last night. I am 15 months post op and have been having them for about the past 4months or longer. sometimes 3 or five times a week. Always late of the evening or at night. Several times I have had them in both legs in one night. I had my potassium checked and it was fine. I drink 100 to 120 ozs. of water a day so I know I am not dehydrated. I wish I knew what could be causing this. It is very painful and it leaves my legs so sore for a few days afterwards. If you find out anything let me know and likewise here. Thanks Cynthia

I FEEL YOUR PAIN...LIERALLY ! LOTS OF WATER AND HORSE CHESTNUT. IT'S A VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT THAT TAKES CARE OF THE VEINS IN THE LEGS.

I had no idea what was causing my leg and feet cramps. I'm 2 years out and have them off and on. Can your water intake really have something to do with it??? I'm amazed. I thought it was a potassium problem but even taking postassium didn't help. I'm going to be checking back to this question to see what others post! This is great!

I know when I was growing up my mom and dad made me eat red beets when I suffered from leg craps, it was from a lack of magnesium I believe...LOL! I have found that if you stretch your calves twice a day you are less likely to have leg craps... I have plantar faciatis so I have to stretch my feet/calves twice a day. HTH!

I had these a lot even before surgery. One easy fix is to make sure you're getting enough calcium and potassium. Both are involved and upping them can usually relieve your symptoms almost instantly.

I can help!! :):) Had my potassium checked, was fine. My symptoms were just the same as everyone on this post has talked about. My PCP said I was lacking TRACE MINERALS. I bought some liquid trace minerals=YUCK, YUCK, YUCKY taste. I found trace minerals in capsule form at Vitamin World, and have NEVER had that happen again. TRACE MINERALS in addition to all your other vites, etc, and LOTS of water. Works like a CHARM!!! :):):) Good luck. Go buy those trace minerals ASAP. You can find them at health food stores or health/vitamin places. I hope this helps everyone on this post. :):):) Take care. I have had problems with this, I find I can prevent it by keeping my feet warm. I know it sounds funny, but when I take off my shoes if my feet have been sweating and are damp, I am sure to have cramps if I don't put on warm dry socks right away. If it starts a very warm shower or bath helps ALOT.

Hello I have experienced leg cramps for a while then I was diagnosed with periphrial neuropathy. I dont think they are related. What helped my cramps where to take vit.b1 500 mg and vit 12 daily. I also sleep with my legs up and if I get a cramp I get up immediatly and walk on it. It goes away much quicker that way. Siahny

i have had leg and toe cramps all my life. The Doc said it was nothing medical, so I made sure i was taking my vitamins just to ensure it wasnt due to lack of potasium. Leg cramps are often cause by dehydration of the muscles. The muscles like everything in your bosy need water to work appropriately. When the muscles "dry" they begin to contract...causing terrible cramps. Its terrible, i know :-(

When I was having leg cramps my surgeon suggested I add an extra calcium supplement daily, that worked. I also eat a banana everyday to make sure I get in my potassium.

Get enough: water, potassium, calcium and magnesium. All or some lacking will cause cramps.

I have suffered from leg/foot cramps pre and post-op. It is not related to my potassium level. That is fine. The Dr. never gave me a true diagnosis. He first suggested drinking seltzer water 16 oz per day. I couldn't stand the taste of it. I ended up taking Quinine (prescription med) every night. If I skip more than two nights the cramping returns. Try the seltzer water (without the fizz). If that doesn't help, I suggest you speak to your Dr. about it. I also notice that if my feet get cold at night the cramps return as well. Good luck to you!
