Question:
Why is VBG more prone to cause the vomiting than RNY?

I have heard that vomiting is more common after VBG than RNY. Is that because the pouch is smaller or why? If the pouches are not the smae size, could you give me an idea of how they compare?    — Sheila B. (posted on July 3, 1999)

With the VBG you have an approximately 30 cc pouch, with a vertical ring gastric bypass or Roen-Y you have approximately a 50 cc pouch which accounts for the problem of vomiting. Often VBG patients have not learned how to eat slower and if they eat too much it can make them vomit. Dr. Popoola. my surgeon, progresses his patients through a liquid diet, then to a pureed diet to allow the patient to feel the consistency that food should be before being swallowed, then to a soft diet and finally after 3 months you are introduced to a regular diet. I had the gastroplasty in 1985. The band was my biggest problem. I would "jam up" and have to vomit. I'll be having the RNY in two weeks. My surgeon says he will remove the old band. There is no band with his version of the RNY. I'm thrilled. To this day, I still can't eat certain things without jamming up.

Hi, the vbg causes vomiting because there is a restrictive ring or mesh at the opening into the rest of the stomach. The bypass does NOT have this restriction. It does however have the dumping syndrome that the vbg does not.

The VBG restricts the amount of food you can eat. You generally start out with a 1 ounce pouch. The RNY relys on mal-absorption of calories to lose weight ,therefore you can eat more with the RNY. The smaller pouch will cause vomiting where the by-passed intestines will cause dumping.

Hi I expierenced vomiting after my VBG. I had mine done about 10 years ago and I lost alot of weight within three months... I got pregnant and my Dr. said that it wouldn't effect what I had done but he was wrong...the vomitting got really bad and the band broke and I am sure the staples pulled away and after I gave birth I gained all weight back... I am looking into getting the RNY done now...
