Question:
How long before you can eat regular food?

How long after surgery were you able to eat regular (non-pureed/non-soft) foods? How long for breads? My surgeon doesn't transition to solid food until 8 weeks post-op and I was wondering if this is the average. Thanks for the info.    — prissb (posted on March 2, 2000)

My surgeon instructed me to start solid foods at 5 weeks post-op including breads. I personally feel better when I eat meat or vegetables as opposed to pizza dough or pasta but you'll have to experiment with a variety of foods to know.

Yup, 8 weeks was about when I went to 'regular' foods. Breads took a lot longer, they were difficult to digest. Even toast was rough! Saltine crackers were ok, though. Take your time. I know it's hard, but you really need to let your body heal. It's for the best! Good luck. Jaye Carl, open proximal RNY 7-29-99, 94 pounds gone forever!

Hi there! I had to wait until I was six weeks post op to eat regular foods. I hope this helps.

Eight Weeks is what my Surgeon also recommends also.If I can stay with it anyone can, go to my webpage click Post-op tips.. Great info and menu ideas for liquid/puree. http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/vbowen/index.html or http://angelfire.com/ok3/vbowenfoodlist/index.html for my Surgeons exact food list, it shows the calories and protein values of each. ;-)
