Question:
What can I eat? What are some of the first foods you can eat and when?

I am 7 days post op and feel great. I am surprised at how fast i recovered from this surgery. But this liquid diet thing is for the birds. Now i am not saying i want to run out and have a burger but maybe one scrabbled egg or oatmeal or something with substainse. I am seeing a dietian on tuesday. So i will stay on liquid diet till then but my question is. What are some of the first foods you can eat after surgery? What are some foods that never make you sick? I havent gotten sick yet and really dont want to. Thank you    — Michelle S. (posted on September 29, 2000)

I am just over two weeks Post Op and am eating Pureed foods and vegetables (potted meat, Deviled Ham, etc) plus Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added) inbetween meals. For a snack I tried Gurber Meat Sticks (Baby food) which is low in Fat and high in protein. My Doctor says to try to get 60 - 80 grams of protein per day. Hang in there.. The Eggs and burgers will come down the road! Ron Open RnY 9/13/00 380# 9/26/00 353#

Michelle, ride the liquid diet out to the end. I know what you are saying but you are also losing weight with just the liquids in a way you wont with foods. Let your body get use to what its like for those pounds to fall off. Once your surgeon clears you you can eat lots of things but take a hint fron me. Watch the carbs. I just had a rude awakening about carbs. and protein. They are not a good weight loss mix. I did cottage cheese and fruit in the morning, meat for lunch 9Chicken, hamburger) and for dinner pork or beef. I have a little fruit coctail (lite) and potted meat on a cracker mixed with lite Miracle whip, I can only eat 2 so the carbs are okay. Soup is good but I dont suggest taking any fluid in 45 mins before or after you eat. That will keep you from being hungry later. I cannot do raw veggies but a small salad would be nice too with no, or very lite dressing. Good luck.

I am about 10 days post op, and i am eating a soft diet, my fav, right now is a fat free refreid beans with fat free cheese, Today i started a protien drink, due to the fact i could not get enought protein during the day, so this will help in not playing the protein game, some of my other fav's are mashed potato's, and scrambled egg, i do somtimes eat yogurt for breakfest or cottage cheese, but i am going to start the protein drink in the morning, and you can add fresh fruit to it, along with ice and have a great smoothie, Now i will have one at breakfest and at lunch i will only have to worry about dinner. When i do eat it is only a bite or two, and i get filled up fast. Good luch with your appt. with you appt on tues, and if you learn anything new, please share it with me, as i am new at this to. Good luck to you Barb

Some of the first things that I ate were, mashed potatoes (instant, so there was no butter or cream) with cream of chicken soup used as gravy. I also ate scrambled eggs with a tiny bit of parmesean cheese in them. Of course an egg was about 3 meals. Be careful! and follow your physicians instructions. Good Luck Mary ANne
