Question:
How many mg of iron should I be taking a day?

On one website it said ferrous sulfate (is that the same thing as iron?) 325 mg twice a day. Does that sound right? Is this correct? I'm a post-op RNY (11/15/99) and trying to do better on taking all my vitamins since I feel so tired all the time. Any answers you have would be wonderful! Thanks! Ferrous sulfate is not well absorbed by RNY, and if taken,it blocks what little vit E we get in. You might want to try irons that are NOT sulfate. The actual elemental iron will be listed on the back of the package. If you are not in trouble with iron presently, a maintenance dose might be 25-50mg. Be sure to take it with a vit C, not with milk, caffeine, antibiotics, Tums, calcium, antacids, or any other stomach "neutralizing" foods or meds. Ideally, get up, take an iron & a C before you "wake up". Give 'em an hour and start your day!
