Question:
How soon after surgery will I beable to drive short distances?

I have two girls 14 and 10 that need to be driven back and forth to school, softball, Dr's etc; any info you can help with would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.    — Tammy H. (posted on April 15, 2001)

Yes, you can drive when you are off all pain meds, but remember, if you have to 'slam on the brakes' you could pull something, so be careful.

My doc gave me the ok to drive at my 1st follow up visit. About 2 weeks after surgery. By then my tummy was not hitting my steering wheel(yeah!!!) and I felt comfortable enough about not hitting the wheel if I had an accident.

My doctor never said one way or the other whether I could drive or not. It makes sense not to drive when you're taking pain meds tho. I'm not taking pain meds & I drove yesterday to the store with no problem. My surgery (open rny) was on the 9th.
