Hi there, my nut says that pasta and rice are no no's. Alittle potato is okay, but stick to the proteins and veggies.

Almost 3 years out and I still cannot eat rice without paying a BIG price. Rice tends to ball up in your pouch and get stuck, especially if there is cheese with it.

I had my RnY almost 5 years ago and I still have trouble with rice. If you eat rice, cooked any way, make sure you eat the other food on your plate first, then a bite of rice, more of the other food, then rice. I have found digging in to the rice first is part of the problem, but also some combinations of rice bother me more than others. Chicken with gravy and rice is bad, but Thai food vegetables and chicken and rice does not bother me. It's something you have to work out over time, but it was over a year before I could have more than 2 bites without getting really sick and wheezy. Best of luck to you. Kathy in Marlborough MA

I am with the first person, rice is a NO! Everything my doctor has said and things I have read say you may never do rice again. Take the more nutritional items instead.

Flabby, I love rice and had rice about 8 to 10 weeks out, but I had heard the stories about it bunching up in my pouch, so here is what I did. I would take a small amount of my cooked rice and chewed it carefully, and then ate a bite of protein after that, maybe two, then a bite of rice again. This helps push the rish through so it won't bunch up, and it worked well. I love my rice, cook it any way you have in the past and start very slow. I can usually eat about 1/4 cup of rice (I am almost 3 years out), but I started with just a few tablespoons, but it was so good, and it did go down smooth. Just remember when eating favorite foods, less is more. Don't go for portion control, but a few bites. Teach your brain that a few bites of favorites is enough. It takes work, but it is worth it. I did NOT have this surgery to give up my favorite foods, but to learn moderation and self control in this awful obesity habits I have. I still work on it daily, but I have had a good measure of success. Take care and best to you. Pretty soon you may want to change that first name from Flabby to Fabulous! Take care Patricia P

I am willing to give up rice or any other carb that will expand in my pouch and do me harm. I know that you can dump on rice and pasta and they expand in your pouch. If you feel you MUST have it, then I agree with the other posters, combine with protein. Remember, we need protein and rice does not contain any. I plan to stay away from it. Refined carbs are the enemy.

I am 3 years and 2 months post-op and am down from 297 to 185. I can eat anything except rice and white bread. I can handle a small amount of pasta but have no problems with crackers or any heavy bread but not white bread.

I couldn't eat rice or chicken for the first 5 years, either. Now I can eat rice, but as someone mentioned, it usually is on the fork with my pork chop or chicken, and I'm a fan of sauces/gravies so that helps it go down. I'm 12 yrs out, so I still eat small portions, but eat normal food, avoiding only milk & sugar.
