Question:
I need your help!

I need a multi vitamin that is in swallowable form with no taste to it. What do you reccommend? If i have to take extra iron and calcium, then fine. I need a good multi. So far I have tried 3 kinds and i hate them all!! Also, can i take flinstones? If so which kind and how many per day? I know i can handle flinstones. Thanks in advance for your answers.    — kittyluver77 (posted on May 7, 2007)

Stacey, You didn't say which ones you tried. I take the adult Centrum chewable. If you do the Flintstones, from what I've read you will have to take more of those than just one chewable centrum. If you are two months out you can start to swallow or break them and half and swallow them. I read your blog and as far as throwing -- the reason could be whatever it is you are eating so you might want to start keeping a journal and not eat those foods again for awhile. I find chili goes down well too. I eat a lot of chicken and at work the cafe makes a mean chicken salad and sometimes the salad bar is decent. The other day I had them make me a cheese burger with no bread and they looked at me kinda funny. When you start taking calcium and iron -- take them 2 hours a part -- they cancel out each other. Right now I'm just taking calcium -- chewables -- big mule pills -- they are okay, I just take a swallow of water after I chew them. I purchased the Viactiv calcium/vitamin D chewables -- those are pretty good --plus statisfies my taste for chocolate.

Hi Stacey! I agree with NaDine, my doctor told us to take either one adult chewable or two of the kids' type. I was taking the orange flavored Centrum chewable, but I just switched to Centrum Silver [I'm 57, so I think I'm entitled! ;) ] They're a yummy berry flavor, pretty tasty. I'm also on the Viactiv, I switch between chocolate, chocolate mint, and French vanilla. Yes, they're my "candy" -- I have one in the morning and another in the evening. Have you tried crushing the vitamin and mixing it with yogurt or some other food? Hope this helps! Good luck! --Mary

Stacy, my docs have me taking a Flintstones chewable with Iron twice a day. They do have a sweet taste to them, but I like them. In addition to that I am also on Calcium citrate 2 tablets twice a day, those I break in half and swallow with warm decaf tea, they go down really well too. Hope this helps!

Hiya Stacey - I was taking two Flinestones with Iron a day. Then at 2 months, I started to take a swallowable multi-vitamin - it's made by Nature Made - Multi-Daily. It doesn't taste good, but it's only in your mouth until you swallow it - so not long. It's packed with good stuff! Vitamin A 3,000IU, Vitamin C 60mg, Vitamin D 400IU, Vitamin E 30IU, Thiamin 1.5mg, Riboflavin 1.7mg, Niacin 20mg, Vitamin B6 2mg, Folic Acid 400mcg, Pantothenic Acid 10mg, Calcium 450mg, Iron 18mg, Zinc 15mg. There is no artifical colors, no artifical flavors, no preservatives, no chemical solvents, yeast or gluten. 100 pills was like $9.00. Good luck. I also take a separate iron and calcium, too. If you want more info on that, let me know.

Hey Stacey... if you can tolerate Flintstones Chewables, then you will be able to tolerate the Centrum Adult Chewable vitamins... take them with my vitamin C (chewables) and the Centrum cancels out the bitter taste of the Vit. C.... hope this helps...

Hi Stacy. Thanks for asking your question. Multi vitamins are yucky by nature for sure. Taking flinstones are fine, but you probably should take one in the morning and one in the evening. Check with your surgeon to be sure that is good with them. I use a vitamin that is not chewable, but I don't have your issues. I just eat something and then take the vitamin, or drink milk after to get rid of any after taste. Just remember one thing, if you forget everything else, remember this. At all cost, take your vitamins and calcium. There are many wls patients who stop for many reasons, don't like it, forget about it, just don't care, etc., but the consequences can be very bad and cause a lot of pain. Once you do that damage to your body, it is pretty much something you can't repair. Find something that works for you and keep up with it. Take it seriously please, for your health sake. I would rather having something that tastes awful then to live in pain from neglect. Please don't neglect your vitamins. Take care, Patricia P.

I use a liquid multi from Tropical Oasis, I take 2 T a day, it tastes like OJ! I also use a chewable multi I bought at Vitamin Word and it has a pineapple flavor, also take 2 a day if I forget the multi (these I can take with me if I have forgotten the liquid). I tried the Viactiv calcium (good but too addicting) and the bariatric advantage calcium (expensive and got bored with them) I use a powder packet called UpCal, recommended by my nut...and I also use a liquid calcium by Tropical Oasis. The T.O. brands are available the cheapest at vitacost.com

My Surgeon told me to take one Flintstones Complete two times a day. I have done that for over a year now and my labs have always been good. I tried a Flintstones knock-off once, and did finish the bottle but they did not taste as good. Julia

Hi. Congratualtions on your surgery decision. I take "Tiny Tablet Mini Prenatal" vitamins. I order them online from Koshervitamins.com I take four tablets a day. I've been taking them for over a year now. My bloodwork always comes back perfect and I feel good. The vitamins supply all my nutrition needs even though I am not pregnant. I supplement these with a b vitamin twice weekly--I was taking daily but the doctor told me I didn't need to. And I take glucosamine because I have arthritis in my hands. Good luck.

I would suggest looking for a non-chewable capsule type vitamin. Stuff that is chewable has no coating so it is going to start disolving in your mouth whether you chew or not. The stinky "vitamin" characteristic smell/taste is often a result of B vitamins. You may have some luck looking for something with a minimum of B vitamins and then supplement with whatever B tab/gel/cap you can tolerate. I have found that the supermarket/pharmacy generic adult vitamin is in a compressed tablet that I can swallow quickly with little taste or smell. All of these exotic chewable/drinkable chocolate, orange, cream, whatever vitamins sound like they are great but sometimes simplicity is what we need. Either way, good luck. Have you tried asking your primary care doctor or surgeon what they reccomend?
