Question:
pain in incision area

My husband had open RNY on May 6. Doing great with the weightloss. But recently he's having a bad pain in the upper 2 inches of the incision area. It's extremely bad when he sneezes and lately things like turning over in the bed or getting up from a chair...pretty much any movement that uses the abdominal muscles...seems to cause this pain. Sometimes, if he places his hand over the area, the pain is not so bad but he still feels it. Calling the Dr. today. Does anyone have any idea of what this might be?    — Ladi_DiAnna (posted on June 9, 2008)

Have him ask the Dr about a possible hernia!

Hi, I am 7 week post opt and I was expercening the same problem. I just had a minor surgery to go into the incision area to release a trapped nerve that was causing the pain and what a different it has made and the pain is gone. Good luck. Jennie E.

there are many possibilities it could be like a hernia, nerve pain or it could just be normal healing. the muscles take a while to heal and have to heal on the inside as well as the outside. with him holding a pillow to the area and it helps it sounds like normal healing, but go ahead and call the doctor and see what they have to say. good luck i hope everything works out for ya'll......Holly

I had that pain for a good 6 months. Open RNY takes a long healing time. I felt a little pain for a good year...Sorry...Didn't they give him a binder? Is he wearing it? If not MAKE him wear it...It helps tremendously with pain, especially the sneezes and coughs and getting up...Mornings are ROUGH getting out of bed. I never took off my binder except to bath. That thing stayed on me for an entire year...I wore a thing sleeveless t-shirt so I didn't itch as bad from it. It felt like armor and made me feel secure and safe by keeping everything nice and tight. If he doesn't have a binder....FIND him one online or ask your surgeon where to get one...It truly helps!

Hi, I had pain pretty much in the same spot. kinda upper/middle left side. I asked the surgeon about it and what he told me is that what they did was tied my old stomach to the muscle there and they did it really really tight. so always ask your Dr. to see what they say, but If it is what was going on with me then yes it will go away on its own. I had my surgery on Dec 4, 2007, and every now and again I still get little "twinges" where an incision is at. Nothing I cant deal with tho. Best of luck to your husband!! Tammie

I had surgery April 2nd and had the same thing, only it was the bottom of my incision. I ended up having a cat scan and had a serenoma (sp?). I had to have it drained and it became even more painful after it was drained. The pain is gone now, but I still have some drainage problems from it. Good Luck!
