Question:
Hair dye

Has anyone dyed their hair after they had hair loss from RNY? My hair is thinning for about 6 weeks now and I really could use a good dye job but I don't know if it will harm it any more    — bikermama (posted on September 17, 2008)

I had my hair done professionaly about 3 months out and I was fine. I would recommend going to get it done and not doing it out of a bottle-the chemicals in the store bought tend to be harsher on the hair

I dyed my own at home.. I did not see any change in the amount of thinning.. It was happening before and is happening after with no visual increase in thinning. Good Luck.. Definately stick with a mild dye.

The hair grows and is fed from the inside not on the outside. I would recommend going to sallys beauty supply if you have them and buy the hair color there. The store brand just isnt the same.I have colored my hair forever and nothing happened. The hair loss associated with weight loss surgery will ease up. It doenst last forever.

Hey I am a cosmetologist try to find a salon that uses Milkshake Color. It is the most gentle hair dye you can get! It is said it is so gentle you can eat it (not that you would want to)! Just call around and ask different salons what color they use I'm sure you can find one in your area its becoming very popular!

I get my full head done (brown and red) every eight weeks or so, and every three to four weeks in between I go get my red touched up since it fades so fast. As far as I can tell, it hasn't affected my hair loss at all. I was getting it done before surgery and had it done a couple times post-op before my hair started falling out, so I don't personally think the two are related. I know bleach is harder on the hair than dye, and my red is just stain, not actual dye ... So I would say just be careful what you do to your hair and use good-quality shampoos, conditioners, and products.

I do/did.... It did not make it any worse, and in fact the dye plumps up the hair strands and makes it look thicker. If you want something a little more gentle, you could use a semi-permanent dye that contains no ammonia, the color will last about a month, then start to fade away.

I have religiously dyed my hair for the past 10 years. I had it dyed 6 weeks post op and that is when it really started falling out. Also, coloring it made my hair very dry and brittle. That was four months ago, and I haven't dared color it since. I figured that I can sacrifice a little vanity until my hair stops falling out and becomes healthier!

When I color my hair myself, it leaves my hair dry and brittle, but when I have my hair stylist do it, it feels soft and conditioned. I had my hair colored by him 8 weeks after my surgery and it felt great! Up until that point I was loosing my hair so fast it was amazing me. He explained to me that not only the diet, but the anesthesia was causing it to fall out, but brushing it would actually help manipulate the hair follicles which they need. I also started taking Biotin and really increasing my protein intake and I have had a complete turn around in my hair lose. I just colored it myself this past weekend with no problems.

I do and did dye my hair. It won't harm it. If your hair is thinning try Hair, Skin and Nails. I was thinning to and started taking it and it stopped falling out and has now started to grow back in. Mostly it's from a zinc deficnancy. Good luck.

I did it before and after...I have had no problem...I am almost 5 months post-op...I always felt better when my hair looked good even if it is falling out...When I color it I always do it at home and I use colorsilk...

I have to dye my hair every three weeks at home. I have lots of gray and I can only wait three weeks to redo my hair. I also use Nioxin shampoo and take biotin. I had hair loss but I am now 6 months post op and my hair is beginning to grow back.
