Question:
Weight Speculation

My surgery is scheduled for next month. I'm 50 yrs. old, 5'3 & weight 220lbs, size 16. What are your speculations in terms of my weight loss? Do you think I'll ever be a size 6 or 8? How much weight do you think I'll loose? I'm hoping for 100lbs.    — Ruth M. (posted on January 24, 2009)

Do you have other health issues that would require WLS? I have sleep apnea, diabetes, GERD, and high cholesterol. A good Dr. will not do WLS unless you have other reasons why you want to lose weight. It is a lot of work. I am sure that you so have some of the co-morbidity that are necessary for any surgeon to do WLS. If I didn't have all of the other problems, I would not have had Lap Band surgery. I would have hit the gym, reduced my food intake and went to counseling. I am sure that you will do well, especially if there are life threatening reasons to have the surgery. Susan

Ruth, We are identicle in height and weight and like you, Im waiting for surgery to come around. We aren't all shaped the same but I think it's feasible for you to be a size 8 or smaller with a loss of 100 lbs if that's your goal. Prior to my weight issue I was 157 lbs and a size 12. The amount of your weightloss will really depend on your determination to make the Band work for you and your effort with the diet from your nutritionist, etc. I'm sure you'll do just fine and I wish you the best of luck!

It depends on what WLS you are having...RNY has a 100 lb average...so that is quite possible...Being a light weight as you are though ...the loss might seem slower than heavier weights...But in a year, you should be in your 6 or 8...I'm 44...at 5'4" ...I weigh 165 and after losing 150 lbs From 315 lbs...I wear and 8 or 10...I have a small waist and big legs so I often can go down rather than up a size from 10. 12's are always too big in the hips and waist even when I can't squeeze my thighs in them! Differnt shapes...different sizes!

Hi Ruth. I had my lap band surgery on 5-20-08. I started at 240lbs and am 5' 3". I am 45 years of age and started at a size 22. I have lost 98 lbs. and currently wear a size 6 or 8, it depends on the clothing. So anything is possible. The way I understand it, if you have RYN the weight can come off faster. I follow the diet very closely and exercise regularly. Both are so very important. I still have about 12 lbs. to go and at this point, the weight loss is very slow. Good luck. Beth

Hi, what type of surgery are you going to be having? I am about the same height and weight you are, so it is good to hear what others have experienced with the same statistics.. I hope to have lap band surgery, reason I chose that, is 1.did not want to have anything re routed, 2. Have a mother aand a brother who both had gastric bypass, and have put all thier weight back on...but then again, with thier personalities they would not have gone to counseling, nor a ssupport group if there was one available. Too bad for them, all that work and money down the tubes! Best wishes to you on what ever type surgery you chose along with what your doctor feels is best for you. I am still waiting on the approval of my insurance company, hope to have my realize band installed in april. My goal is to lose at least 80 lbs and be in a size 12! I wear a size 22/24, depends on how the garmet is made, and whether it is good construction, or cheap from China or Korea! Have a great day and a very successful surgery and results. Farmgirl58

A lot of folks have good answerers for you. Your profile dose not state your surgery type. I had the VSG because I did not want the problems of the LapBand or the malnutrition. We are considered "Light Weights" having less then 100 pounds to lose. Weather in WLS or "normal" diets, we "smaller" folks the weight comes of slower for what ever reason. However I should point out that slower is good for a verity of reasons. We will have less excess skin to be removed, its is easier on us health wise and more then likely (if U keep your diet guidelines) hair loss is little if at all. I too am larger in the butt and legs then on the top and I should also note that different clothing manufactures clothing will fit different. Less fits different the Rider or Old Navy for example. Good luck.

I had gastric bypass in March of 2007. At that time I weighed 265 lbs. I am 5'0" and was 52 years old. I wore a size 28 and my doctor set my goal weight for 125. I thought to myself how unrealistic. I would be so blown away to just lose 100 lbs. Well that was almost two years ago, and I am down to 110 and a size 2. I don't exercise like I should, but I am NOT inactive either. I have so much energy and I am constantly on the go with my family and grandchildren. My goals at work are off the chart, and I have been named Globe Teacher of the Year and I am currently a finalists in State Teacher of the Year. I owe it all the WLS. I wish you the same successes. It was the greatest decision I have ever made for myself and the ones I love.

I'm 54, 5'5". 7 months post surgery. I went into this at at 297 pounds and have lost 80. I'm looking to get down to 150. I was thin until I turned 30 and although I was 125 then, that was 25 years ago so I don't think it's practical to think I'll get down that far. Jean size prior, 28; just bought size 18 and they won't last long. Shirts down from 30-32 to 18-20. I can't believe how good I look and I'm only halfway there! You will love the new you, whether you get down to 6 or 8 or 10.

I had RNY on 04/11/08 at age 48, 5'2" was 224 LB, size 18-20. At 9 months out, age 49 I am 130.5 LB. I am wearing size 4 pants. I have surpassed doctor's goal weight of 135 LB but my personal goal is 120 LB. The weight loss has slowed way down but I am still slowly losing. Hair is coming back too. Just had a breast lift and implants on 12/30/08. Would like to do more when finances permit. Couldn't be happier. No regrets. I followed every rule so have had no issues. Good luck!
