Question:
Where is feeling of jet lag, weakness, fatigue coming from?

For 3 weeks, I have been feeling very low energy. I have 8.5 post op, age 64. I exercise on treadmill twice a day. The feeling reminds me of jet lag. I do have sleep apnea, but use a machine to help regulate breathing - last 15 years. I've lost 86 lbs with 15 more to go. My protein is 80g (in combination liquid and solids) and drink 70 oz of water each day. My labs showed no abnormalities. Still weak. Take all bariatric supplements I am to take. I have an appointment next week to see pcp. Coming to the boards have helped me so any comments would be appreciated.    — Susan33324 (posted on March 13, 2007)

I'd say the activity on the treadmill twice a day could be the culprit. You might want to take that to once a day every other day. When we exercise our body needs time to recover and it sounds as if you are not allowing your body to recover from the previous days workout. I'm 3 weeks post-op today and today is one of those days I feel so tired and its probably because of that body pump workout I went to on Sunday -- just a tad too soon. I recognize that I have to get my cardio level back up before I attack that class again. It's an awesome class but I think I may have tried it too soon. I'm going to stick to the stationary bikes and treadmill and light weights. I'd say go to once a day on the treadmill and start to incorporate some light weights.

"all bariatric supplements" depends on who calls them that, so just for our info, can you say what they are, roughly? Does that include non-ferrous iron and B12, for example?

Hi Susan, you ask a good question. I had heard that you got all this new energy after surgery, etc., but I never really did. I think that for you and for me, age plays a big role here. We are not going to excel to younger heights anymore, but I will tell you that as much as you are exercising, you are doing well. Keep up your supplements and your protein, and if your iron is in check, then just be sure you get the rest you need to your body doesn't fight you. If you get too fatigued, you could stall your weight loss and discourage yourself. My advice is to be thankful for the weight loss you have and be encouraged, you are walking twice a day and losing a great amount of weight. If you need some extra rest to support that, I encourage you to get it. It is an emotional time to go through this type of stuff. That first you is full focus on exercise and what to eat and drink, and it is really a full time job in my opinion, lots of stress. Try extra rest and check the iron levels. When I get too tired, I find my iron levels are down a little. I use foods to get them back up, not supplements, but that may be what you need. Take care, and best to you. Patricia P.
