Question:
Looking for a DS doctor in Columbus, Ohio.

In Columbus Ohio, bariatric surgery seems to be performed at Mt Carmel West, OSU Medical Center, or Barix Clinics. But none of them list duodenal switch as an option. I had chosen RNY and have turned in my initial screening paperwork for Mt. Carmel's program (last week). But now I'm hearing about duodenal switch and have done a little research and am 'intrigued'. It might be a better option for me. Is the closest DS doctor in Dayton? (and a related question) What is the hospitalization time for DS? Thanks!    — abeeba (posted on February 20, 2008)

Schumacher David L MD Facs. 2115 Leiter Rd Miamisburg, OH 45342 (937) 384-6922 He is a very good Doctor. I am not 100% sure if he does the DS but I'm pretty sure he does. I sent you his information. He is around the Dayton Area. He does his surgeries in the Kettering Hospitals. I hope this info will help you. Here is there web site as well. http://www.ketteringbariatrics.com I wish you nothing but the best of luck.

Hi April! The DS is a wonderful option and being in Ohio you have a reputable surgeon in Bowling Green. He is listed on duodenalswitch.com check it out! Many people travel very far to get the DS. Come to the DS forums here on OH. I chose the DS because I Wanted a surgery that has the least chance of long-term re-gain, is BEST at curing Diabetes (98%+), removes much of the hunger hormone Ghrelin, NO DUMPING, NO MARGINAL ULCERS and NO STOMA / STRICTURES. With the DS: there is no stoma, so no stoma strictures; there are no limitations (other than volume) against drinking before, during or after meals; 80% of ingested fat is malabsorbed, allowing liberal use of eggs, butter, mayonaisse, healthy oils, marbled meats, cheese, etc., in the diet; 98.9% of type II diabetics are CURED of this devastating disease, with data showing stable cure over 10 years out; there is the best average weight loss and most durable (average 76% excess weight loss going out 10 years) of all of the bariatric surgeries.

Me again...If I did want to travel to Kettering or Dayton or Bowling Green for the DS procedure...what about support groups? I can see driving 3 hours round trip for the surgery...but don't see me working that into my life on a regular basis post-op. How do I do post-op follow-ups and support groups? Thanks!

Im sure that they have, Support groups around where you live. Since your in Columbus, Im sure that the Mount Carmel will allow you to attend their groups even though you didnt have your surgery there at the hospital. I know at Dr. S office they allow that his office has a support meeting 1 time a month. Im not sure how it is with the follow up with the DS, I had the sleeve done and I had to see Dr. S 7 days out, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and then 1 year as follow up after my 1st year is over then I will only see him 1 time a year unless I need to for some reason I can. I hope that information help you. I wish you all the best.

Be careful of advice on surgeons that "claim" to perfom the DS. the best source of surgeon info on the DS is at www.duodenalswitch.com. Not a commercial site, run by a DS patient, and surgeons only make the cut if they are well versed in the DS. That being said, I know there are several options in Ohio. I would also come over to the DS message board and ask there. It's a great choice, I would never have made another one. Good luck.

I would check with Dr. Myers at Riverside www.freshstartbariatrics.com I do know that most of his surgerys are either RNY or Lap Band, but it's worth a look in Columbus. Also, the "all inclusive" program he has made the whole process of WLS MUCH easier, and in my opinion, with a better chance of long term success, than you'd get at the other providers in Columbus.
