Question:
One more question...

I am in the final stages of all my doc appointments before my revision surgery (LAP Band to RNY) I have never had any co-morbidities- just overweight. When I had the Lap Band I was 5'3" 250lbs. I am having a revision due to a malfunction of the band..now at 280lbs. I am only 23 years old. Is it wrong for me to want this so badly just to simply take the weight off since there is really nothing else "wrong" with me?    — jtaormina (posted on February 17, 2009)

Getting weight off is not a simple thing. This is a life saving measure. You may not have other problems at this time. Yet you know if the weight does not come off the other problems will follow. Never feel guilty for saving your own life. It is what you need or your doctor would not be willing to do it.

DREAM BIG, DREAM HIGH! I did not have any co-morbidities and I had Fobi-Pouch at age 30. My hearts desire was to be thin and HEALTHY, I knew the risks in the future if I remained obese. I knew that life would happen right before my eyes and my weight was holding me back from living it! Your personal reasons don't need to be justified, they are just that, YOURS. Good luck and the best to you and your WLS journey. There is nothing "wrong" with you!

Sweetie at 23 years old...You have so much living to do...and in the long run whether you realize it or not, you will be adding years of health to your life! There is NOTHING wrong with you for wanting to be thin...but do take it serious and stay healthy as well! At 280 lbs, you are a ticking time bomb with only youth to save you right now and maybe 10 more pounds to spare before all heck breaks loose! So don't kid yourself...You are going to be MUCH healthier both mentally and physically! Take your revision seriously and follow the rules as close as you can...forever... and you will be happy and stay thin AND HEALTHY!! Big hugs and much luck!

I had nothing wrong with me on paper as well, however with a BMI of 46+ I was a ticking time bomb. Plus my family history shows me I was headed for a lot of adult on-set this and that. I wanted to be healthy and not walk down the same path as the rest of my family - so I did it to "lose weight". There is nothing wrong with wanting to be healthy! Good luck with your RNY -best thing I ever did. before surgey 5'8" - 286lbs, size 26/28. after surgery: 5'8" - 150lbs, size 4.

"wrong" with you?? Absolutely NOT!! You are being proactive in your decision to have the revision. You are adding years to your life, your health will improve, and so will your self image and cofidence. Congrates!

Julie, Just something to think about...I am 5"3" and I weigh 289lbs so we are close in size. I however am 48. BIG difference. I now have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. My legs, back, and feet hurt. I take 5 different meds. It is hard to do the simple things anymore. Remember we are carrying around an extra person. But because you are so much younger you may not feel it now. But unfortunately if you stay this way or God forbid gain more as you get older (which is what happened me, I weighed 130 at your age) you will feel it. Just remember use it as a tool and enjoy the rest of your long life. This is like preventative medicine for you. Hugs....Donna

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with fixing a problem BEFORE it gets worse. You are smart for wanting to do this NOW. Good luck! Hugh

I will jump on this band wagon with everyone else here; and they are all correct; preventative medicine and probably life saving measures taken at 23 are very valuable as you get older. As we age we generally slow down with things. But do this now and take your revision seriously and you will be on your way to a wonderful new you. At 54, I'm still glad I did it. Good Luck and God Bless, vinnigirl

Oh Julie - no way is there something "wrong" with you! You are, if anything, being preventative. You have sooo much life to live - getting the weight off now before there are bigger problems is smart. I wish you the best!

Julie, Do not feel bad about wanting the weight off. If you do not have any co-morbities now you will have if you do not get the weight off soon. You need to go into this surgery with a positive attitude and a song of joy in your heart. This is the best solution for you and your overall future health. You go girl, Mary

Obesity will kill you. You are doing the right thing. I wish I had done it when I was much younger. Good luck.

If I had a nickel for everyone that told me not to have the surgery, just to diet and exercise (which I had for 17 years and failed to lost it all or keep it off for the full 17 years.) Now that I've had the surgery, and despite my imperfections, I feel great, have lost 50 lbs so far (after 10 weeks) and no longer suffer from being voraciously hungry all the time. I'm not suffering anymore, and my health has improved so much. I lost more weight than this before but did not lose the hypertension, or feel so good. Other people are not in your shoes and do not necessisarily understand. My critics still do not understand that I am not suffering anymore. I'm so glad I had this surgery!

My one and ONLY regret about this entire process is that I didn't have my surgery until I was 43 years old. And having WLS is NOT like having a boob job -- it's not elective, or cosmetic, or because we're vain. In most cases, it's to save our lives. I didn't have very many co-morbidities when I was 23, either, but I sure as heck did by the time I was 43. As someone else posted, obesity WILL kill you, and the sooner you get the weight off the better off you'll be. You're not wrong at all.
