Question:
Any good alternatives to plastic surgery?

Any suggestions, types of exersize, lotions or potions would be great! Surgery date Jan. 6 2006.    — pasmoon (posted on December 21, 2005)

I had my surgery in August 2005. The best thing I have found is regular exercise. I was released from the hospital on a Thursday and started walking on Saturday. I just walked for 10 minutes and now I ride a bike for 30 minutes, light weight lifting for 30 minutes and 30 minutes of walking or the eliptical machine. I didn't overdo things when I first started and now I like going since I lose and don't gain. Things are toning up nicely and energy levels are through the roof. If I do decide to have plastic surgery down the line it will be because I can do no more with exercise and not the other way around. We all know that lotions and potions do no good otherwise we wouldn't be having WLS or plastic surgery. I exercise first thing in the morning at the local YMCA and then go about my day with no excuses to find for not exercising. Find a pattern for exercising that works for you and stick with it, you will now have the tool of WLS to help.

Lyn, you just never know if you'll need PS. It's a function genetics, how big you started, how long you were MO, and the condition of your skin. Things like staying hydrated, exercise and time may help in a small way. However, the elasticity of your skin could be permanently damaged due to being MO in which case there's no bouncing back. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind: Building muscle "fills up" the extra skin and makes it look less saggy. This worked for my arms. To build muscle I did weight training. Also, skin will "bounce back" some, so if you're borderline, wait a year after you're at goal to see if it gets better. I don't think any lotion or potion out there would help enough to repair the amount of stretch we're dealing with. However, if you end up with a huge flap of skin hanging down past your pubic bone in the end like I did, no amount of cream, exercise, water, nutrients or anything else was going to magically shrink it back up. I had over 7 pounds of skin removed by PS and that was the only way it was going away.

Jana, from looking at your pic, your build is good. I would just say walk walk walk as soon after the surgery as you can. I have been informed by my doctor that I will be up walking the same day as my surgery, or the next morning, depending on surgery time. After about 6 months, we can start weights. You need to do some sort of resitance training. everyone's body is different. You do what you can do, and then id you need help, get a tummy tuck. Best of luck to yoU! Sandra M

After my surgery the best excersize that worked for me was Yoga. On my incision I used Vitamin E capsules to reduce the scares. For food portions I followed my doctor's instructions. You never know if you need a plastic surgery until after you loose all your weight and it will be a decision to make with your MD at the proper time. It is too early to think about it at this time. Good luck and I am sure you are making the right decision for yourself.
