Hi... I think that Naproxen is the same sort of stuff that is in Aleve, and I was told that Aleve (and ibuprofin) is a no-no.... that it can hurt your pouch. As far as OTC meds, Tylenol seems to be the only thing. But as far as prescriptions, I was told that Celebrex is probably the safest for your pouch. You shouldn't have to put up with stomach pain when trying to get rid of other aches and pains. Call your doctor and ask him to put you on something else! Best of luck to you!!!

You need to let your Primary care Dr know about your stomach issues asap.....there are other drugs out there instead of taking the naproxen that don't mess with your stomach. Vioxx is one of them.....

NAPROXEN is a big no-no because it's so hard on your pouch. Talk to your doctor asap because you could end up with severe problems. It can cause bleeding.

I was also on Naproxen for joint and back pain pre-op. Because of reflux I had to have an upper endoscope done which showed that I was beginning to have ulcers in my stomach. They immediatly put me on a acid reducer and took me off Naproxen and any type of NSAID's. I was then ordered Ultram for the pain. Now post op I take a small dose of percocet for pain and it works great.

I take hydrocodone with no problem at all. I've been taking it daily for over two years because of knee pain. I'm not sure about naproxen - is it an anti-inflammatory drug? It might be the source of your problem and I would certainly talk with a doctor about it. You could be developing ulcers.

I had to step in to respond to Heather's response that Vioxx is OK for the pouch. Not at all. Vioxx is a very harsh Cox 2 inhibitor, and while it does wonders for back pain, I was on it for over a year until I developed a pouch ulcer from it. I am now on Bextra and cytotec (coats the stomach), with good results but not as good as the vioxx.

I am on oxycodone for my back pain. I am due to ahve surgfery on APril 28th. I take Oxycodone and Lortab. The Dr wants me to stop the Oxycodone before surgery. He said that My pain threshhold will be a lot lower if I am on the pain meds before surgery. It will be harder to control the pain after if I take the pain meds before surgery, so I am slowly going off of them.

A couple years ago I took hydrocodiene (but on an empty stomach- very stupid) for back pain. I think it caused an ulcer. Now I have to take Nexium for the stomach pain. Don't know if it would have done this if I had'nt taken it on an empty stomach. However I can take Vicodin... I've learned the hard way, NO MEDS on an EMPTY stomach since wls!

I suffer from chronic pain and I use the duragesic patch,Lortab and Celebrex as the anti=inflamatory. I was told that ibuprofen type meds were not safe for me to take.

The hospital gave me liquid Hydrocodone (generic for Vicodin)upon my release after surgery for pain. I took it in pill form prior for back pain and am too in need of surgery. I would ask the doc about the Naproxen though. My paperwork said no aspirin or non-steroid anti-inflamatories. I think Naproxen may fall under that catagory. Hope this helps.
