Question:
I have a question about SUSHI & RICE...

Once you are cleared to eat all foods has anyone had an issue with Rice or Sushi? Some tell me their pouch cannot tolerate rice at all. I know everyone is different. Input please!    — MyOrchids (posted on June 1, 2009)

Well, rice is full of carbs, so it would be a bit of a risk to try. It's up to you whether you want to try it. I would recommend sashimi over sushi though. It's almost the same thing, just without the rice.

For me rice is evil!!! I ate one teaspoon and it felt like it was 20. I got so sick it was not worth ever trying again.

My surgeon told me upfront - NO WHITE CARBS, PERIOD. That means potatoes, white rice, white bread, white pasta, popcorn, etc. I know that some people on these forums ARE able to eat a little rice, but based on what I've read, those people are few and far between. And my surgeon DID say that if I absolutely felt that I had to have some of those things, to make sure they are all WHOLE GRAIN. Believe me, I know.... I am a sushi nut. Before my surgery on March 2, I had a standing Friday night Sushi date with my best friend. Between us, we'd have 4 hand rolls and at least 3, maybe 4 regular rolls. Well, after some figuring out of things, I still do have a standing Friday night sushi date. My favorite roll was a scallop hand roll. So, what I have them do now, is just take the 2 scallops they would chop up and put in the roll, and chop them even finer, add a half teaspoon of mayo and some smelt roe, and I have a little dish (slightly over a quarter of a cup), of "sushi" all my own. I eat it with a baby spoon, so it lasts longer, and I've never had a single problem with it. I've even eaten it with sliced avocado, and eaten chopped salmon prepared the same way. But as to eating rice or nori or tempura, or any of the spicy sauces.... I'd say it's safer to stay away from them.

The glycemic index of rice is very high. This means that within a very short time of consuming it, you will be absolutely starved. Even if you can tolerate eating it, I recommend that you NOT start the habit. You will be left feeling unfulfilled and want more to eat. Probably why people say they don't stay full on Chinese food too. Go with ordering sashimi or a tofu dish. Rice is just not worth it.

I did try sushi for the first time since surgery this past Saturday and everything went well. I am 6 weeks post op, but I have not tried eating just rice or pasta yet. I'm a little scared!

It depends on whether you hae a RNY or DS, and how far out you are. I'm a DS, three months out. I can get great brown rice sushi from a local supermarket. It's made fresh daily, and is just as good as a sit-down sushi bar or Japanese restaurant. It's yunny, but I can only eat a couple pieces before I'm full. It's an all day meal for me. If I were and RNY, I wouldn't try it. The rice can get stuck in your stoma, and you'd have to get "roto-rootered".

I had Lapband surgery in Aug 08 and have eaten sushi and rice many times; so far I have had no problems. Marti in San Jose
