Question:
Has anyone had symptoms like this?

I wonder if this is regular post-op pouch pain or if I'm working on a stricture--I'm 3 weeks out (lost 17# but it seems really slow compared to other people, started at 269#) so it's perfect timing. I have had to call the surgeon a couple of times about piddly things and I have my 1 mo. visit next week, so I'm trying to hold off. Here's the thing: I usually do fine with liquids, applesauce, cottage cheese, yogurt, shakes, etc., but they seem to hang around forever (if I drink a shake for breakfast I really can't drink anything for a couple of hours, for instance) and sometimes I get a pain like a piece of food "stuck sideways" that takes a few minutes to resolve. I am on soft solids now, but I have found I get that same pain after just 1-3 small well-chewed bites. It takes 30-60 min. for the pain to go away with the soft solids, and frequently--more so as each day passes--I find I'm belching more and feel really 'overfull' to the point I need to throw up--little food but lots of fluid and mucous. I'm not actually nauseous--it's more like the feeling you get after Thanksgiving pig-outs where you just wish you could decompress your stomach. I am not taking fluids within an hour of meals. Could I just be overeating? The worst foods are scrambled eggs, but yesterday it was 2 tiny bites of brown beans and a couple of really overcooked green beans. Sorry this is so long, I'm wordy.    — meepgirl (posted on March 28, 2006)

Hi, this is called frothing or throwing up clear fluids at times. At 3 weeks out your tummy is still trying to figure things out. I am one year out & have just now been able to manage to eat half a cluster of a crab leg or one chicken wing for a meal. I've had the surgery and so have two of my sisters. One thing I have learned is be patient with your tummy, self and food. It has usually taken most of us a lifetime to get to where we needed to have this wonderful surgical tool and we can give it some time to learn how to use it. Best wishes and as always talk to your health care provider regarding your concerns. Kenya A.

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head, esp with the timing. Can you call for scope now or are you just going to go with protein shakes and water til you get there?

Hey Jeanette!! I havent gotten the chance to talk to you too much at work lately... You know how that goes... Sorry to hear your not feeling well. My advice is to call Dr Shin. Trust me he will be more upset about it if you don't call him with problems. It very well sounds like you could be developing a stricture. Please give him a call if you haven't already. Talk to you at work.

Hi, I have had 4 strictures, and it sounds like you are having one. It is a 5 minute plan to get it taken care of. As for call ing the surgeon, this is what you pay the big bucks for, and he should be happy you are calling. Playing doctor is not good.

yeah...welcome to life post wls. Jump up and down and ignore it. Just kidding! All though, in my mind at least, it works! Not sure what type of surgery you had, as I'm viewing this in Q&A, but, yes, your stomach is trying to figure out what the hell is going on and who took the acid! Face it, you will never eat the same again. I'm 11 years post and it's still a daily, cultish fetish!

I haven't had WLS yet. I have something called gastroparesis... my stomach doesn't do the squeezing and grinding necesary to pass food into my intestine (eventually it does but it takes forever). I have a lot of the same symptoms you are having. Don't know that you are experiencing the same thing but you might want to google Gastroparesis and see if your symptoms sound familar. In some ways, its like having wls. There is a diet for the condition and its alot like the post-op diet. Soft, mushy and/or wet foods, low fat, low fiber.. supposed to eat small meals frequently. Stricture, GP, whatever... I'd suggest you call your surgeon. Good luck!
