Question:
Should I get micro-braids before I have surgery?

Braid have the tendency to pull at your hair and with all the post I have read about your hair possibly failing out after surgery. Should I have my hair braided before my surgery. I don't want my hair to fall out. Please help!!    — sjanuary_28 (posted on April 28, 2009)

Hi Shelly....I am 55, and have always had fine hair. In recent years (BWLS - before weight loss surgery), I would shower and clumps of so much hair would clog the drain that the water wouldn't go down. My dietician and several people in the support groups told me about taking BIOTIN, so I got a bottle of that before surgery and began taking it right away. I've gotta tell ya, I haven't pulled a clump of hair out of the drain for 8 weeks now (since surgery).... It seems that I've quit losing hair all together. Now, that may change, some people say that you begin seeing hair loss from 3 - 6 months, but I've also read that if you keep up your protein and continue to take multivitamins and the Biotin, you will not lose your hair, or at least not as much.

I can understand not wanting to lose your hair; afterall for some women, hair helps to define them. I would suggest that you speak with someone who specializes in hair loss (not just a beautician). That way the specialist can give you advice that will help you to decide what is your best option about what to do before your surgery. Good luck with your surgery. I am 5 dsys out. My surgery was 4-23-09.

I think I would advise against it because the hair loss can be very real. What I ended up doing was wearing sophisticated wigs or falls and kept my hair showing in the front and the wig/fall on the back. I did this until my hair started growing back and getting thicker because it had thinned out pretty good. BIOTIN for sure, but it hasn't proven a cure all for me. I think it helped very much though. Maybe try Dr. Miracles as well (if you can stand the smell YUCK), the oil that you put on the scalp. I did that too. Right now my hair grows just a quickly as it falls out. I always have hair in my comb/brush, but my length and thickness doesn't noticeably change. Wishing you the best!

I don't know whether to braid or not. But I can tell you I asked my physician about my hair loss. He suggested Biotin and I can say it helps out alot. My hair loss has stopped. I am 4 years post-op
